Twenty-one students from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), who are part of the UI Supermileage Vehicle (SMV) team, have once again achieved notable success at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2024. This prestigious competition took place from July 2 to 6, 2024, at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit in Lombok, and featured over 700 students from across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.
The UI SMV team consists of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Naval Architecture students from the 2020 to 2022 cohorts. The team members include Yusuf Timothy Turnip, Zahran Mizuya Kusmana, Daffa Farhan Ahmad, Zharfan Rosyad, Mohammad Iqbal Risya, Ahmad Fatih Faruqi, Rafael Sinema Hia, Jericho Christian Marsangap Pohan, Arafa Maulana Abdillah, Abdullah Iman Ramadhan, Irvian Zakky Marta, Naufal Azmi, Timothy Jonathan Sirait, Fransiskus Xaverius Godwin Siringoringo, Haydar Mahdi Khalifa Fill Ardh, Haidar Satrio Wibowo, Marsya Renatha Bahasoean, Haikal Muhammad Prabaswara, Fadhal Pandya Faiz, Fathia Ainina Jasmine, and Taqiyya Najla Syarif.
In this competition, UI SMV presented two innovative cars, Arjuna and Nakoela. The Arjuna car won second place in the Regional Championship category and third place in the Urban Battery Electric category. Meanwhile, the Nakoela car achieved fourth place in the Prototype Internal Combustion Engine category. These achievements were made possible through the dedication and hard work of the UI SMV team, along with the support of seven faculty advisors: Prof. Dr. Ario Sunar Baskoro S.T., M.T., M.Eng., Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang Sugiarto, M.Eng., Dr.-Ing. Mohammad Adhitya, S.T., M.Sc., Dr. Ir. Feri Yusivar, M.Eng., Dr.-Ing. Ridho Irwansyah, S.T., M.T., and Dr. Ahmad Syihan Auzani, S.T., M.T.
“I am pleased with the progress of UI SMV, which has made significant developments from the previous year. We are now focusing on sustainability research and good external collaboration. This year, we have successfully brought our latest car, Arjuna, to the top 2 in Asia in the Urban category. However, we are not satisfied with this alone; next year, we hope our team can bring UI SMV to be the World’s Top 1 at the Shell Eco-marathon World Championship with even better innovations,” said Yusuf, the current General Manager of UI SMV.
In this competition organized by Shell, student teams are challenged to explore solutions for current and future transportation and energy challenges. The Shell Eco-marathon serves as a platform for students worldwide to innovate and showcase their work in creating energy-efficient vehicles. The competition features various categories, ranging from Challenger to World Championship Series, testing participants’ skills and creativity in building their innovative cars.

Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, Dean of FTUI, expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the UI SMV team, “The achievements of the UI SMV team not only demonstrate the excellence of their vehicle innovation but also the dedication and spirit of all team members and faculty advisors. This accomplishment shows that FTUI students have great potential to contribute to creating vehicle solutions that support sustainable energy. We hope that in the future, the UI SMV team can continue to achieve success and inspire other students.”
The UI SMV team was established in 2010 and has consistently excelled in various national and international competitions. With a focus on developing energy-efficient cars and clean energy use, UI SMV remains committed to producing vehicle innovations that support environmental sustainability. Looking ahead, UI SMV aims to win the 2024 Energy-Efficient Vehicle Contest and the 2025 Shell Eco-marathon Asia to be held in Doha, Qatar. Through thorough preparation and continuous innovation, the UI SMV team creates energy-efficient cars ready to achieve global success.
