UI Inaugurates Nano Device Laboratory: A Center of Excellence for Nanotechnology Development in Indonesia

“The establishment of the Nano Device Laboratory in Indonesia is a strategic step towards positioning our country as a key player in the global technology industry. In this era of artificial intelligence (AI), this laboratory will serve as a strong foundation for the development of the domestic chip industry,” said Dr. (HC) Mochtar Riady, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (2002-2005), Universitas Indonesia (UI), at the inauguration of the Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoko Hartanto, M.Sc. Nano Devices Laboratory.

Mochtar Riady, the founder of Lippo Group, and Dr. Lies Harmidy, were the main donors behind the construction of the laboratory, which was inaugurated on Monday (2/9) at the Mochtar Riady Plaza Quantum (MRPQ) building, Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (FT) UI. This state-of-the-art smart laboratory is designed to drive research and innovation in nanotechnology. The name Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoko Hartanto, M.Sc., honours one of the prominent figures in sensor technology and a founding father of the Electrical Engineering Department at FTUI. Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoko Hartanto, M.Sc. was a distinguished professor at FTUI and served as the Dean of FTUI from 1996 to 2000.

Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs at FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., stated, “This laboratory is not just a symbol of technological progress but also reinforces FTUI’s role in providing research-based education for our students. We hope this laboratory will become a driving force in the development of semiconductor technology in Indonesia. With the available facilities, we are confident that we can produce a generation of engineers ready to face the challenges in the nanotechnology industry.”

The Nano Device Laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge research tools, enabling researchers and students to conduct highly precise experiments. With advanced facilities such as a Semiconductor Parameter Analyzer and maskless laser lithography, the laboratory will play a crucial role in positioning Indonesia as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.

The excellence of the Nano Device Laboratory lies not only in its advanced equipment but also in its vast potential to facilitate collaboration between academia and industry. Through such collaborations, the laboratory is expected to produce innovations that contribute significantly to national technological progress. Additionally, it will serve as a platform for students and young researchers to develop their skills in nanotechnology, further establishing FTUI as a leading centre of education and research in Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoko Hartanto, M.Sc., in his remarks, emphasized the importance of this laboratory for advancing science and technology in Indonesia. “I hope the Nano Device Laboratory will serve as a space for young generations to develop innovations that not only strengthen the domestic semiconductor industry but also contribute to global technological advancement,” he stated.

The laboratory’s establishment was also supported by substantial contributions from Mochtar Riady, who not only donated most of the advanced equipment but also supported the construction of the Mochtar Riady Plaza Quantum (MRPQ) building, where the laboratory is housed.

With the presence of the Nano Device Laboratory, FTUI further solidifies its position as an educational institution committed to supporting research and the development of sustainable technology. This laboratory is not just a facility but a symbol of FTUI’s dedication to advancing knowledge and equipping students with relevant skills to face future technological challenges.
