FTUI Organizes International Short Course Once Again, 18 Participants from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Join the Program

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), has once again organized the International Short Course in Engineering, which was attended by 18 students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The month-long program (July 29 – August 23, 2024) offers HKUST students the opportunity to earn 2 credit units, with the theme “Tropical Sustainable and Renewable Energy.”

“We are very excited to once again collaborate with HKUST through this International Short Course in Engineering program. We hope that this program provides an opportunity for students from both universities to share knowledge and deepen their understanding of technology in the field of sustainable energy. Additionally, we hope that HKUST students will gain valuable cross-cultural learning experiences, both academically and non-academically,” said Fadhilah Muslim S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., DIC, Head of the International Office, during the opening speech of the International Short Course in Engineering Program, welcoming the HKUST students on Monday (July 29).

Fadhilah further added that this collaboration is a crucial step in strengthening FTUI’s network of partnerships with leading universities worldwide, particularly in the fields of education and research. Throughout the program, participants will gain comprehensive learning experiences through a series of activities. From academic talks, and discussions with FTUI students, to industrial visits, participants will gain a deep understanding of various innovative solutions in the field of sustainable energy.

To enrich perspectives in engineering and provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in the energy industry, eight academic talks were held, covering a range of topics such as *Energy Transition in Tropical and Developing Countries, Green Hydrogen, Green Fuel, Biomass Valorization, Circular Economy in Extractive Industry, Plastic Sustainability Strategies, Fuel Cells,* and *Mapping 30 Years of Sustainability of Solar Energy Research in Developing Countries.*

The Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at FTUI provided their best lecturers to deliver these academic talks. Participants will also visit four leading industrial companies in Indonesia: PT Maggot Indonesia Lestari, Jatiluhur Hydroelectric Power Plant, PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing, and PT INOAC. These industrial visits offer students the chance to interact with professionals in the industry and gain real-world insights into the application of sustainable energy technologies in the industrial sector.

In addition to the academic activities, the program also offers a cultural program, allowing HKUST students to get to know Indonesian culture more closely. HKUST students will learn the Indonesian language and explore various Indonesian cultural activities such as batik painting, traditional instruments, and pottery making. Furthermore, participants will visit several famous cultural tourist attractions in Indonesia, including Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Citra Alam Riverside, and Rumah Keramik F. Widayanto. This program aims to provide a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s rich and diverse culture.

“I hope this program can serve as a strong bridge for more productive collaborations between the two universities and others in the future,” said Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Ir. Mahmud Sudibandriyo, M.Sc., Ph.D. He emphasized that this program not only strengthens the relationship between the educational institutions involved but also opens new opportunities for joint research, knowledge exchange, and the development of innovations that benefit all parties. He also believes that the synergy created through this program will have a significant positive impact on academic and professional advancements in the future.
