SBE UI Holds a Company Visit to PT KAO Indonesia to Enhance Insights into the Cosmetics Industry

The Society for Biological Engineering Universitas Indonesia Student Chapter (SBE UI SC) organized an industrial visit to PT KAO Indonesia on Tuesday (22/10). Located in the Jababeka industrial area in Cikarang, the event was attended by 58 SBE UI SC members, comprising Chemical Engineering students from FTUI, class years 2021 to 2024. In today’s business and industry landscape, understanding production processes and the innovations companies apply has become essential, especially for students entering the workforce.

One rapidly growing sector is the cosmetics and personal care industry, where major companies like PT KAO Indonesia play a significant role in eco-friendly, high-quality product innovation. As a leading company in skincare, hair care, and household products, PT KAO Indonesia continuously innovates by prioritizing quality and environmental sustainability. This visit to PT KAO Indonesia’s factory in Cikarang provided students with in-depth insights into the production process, raw material management, and the final products reaching consumers.

The visit began with a presentation by Rifki Syah Falah from PT KAO Indonesia’s Human Capital Development, offering a comprehensive overview of the company profile and the various innovations they have implemented. “The Kirei Lifestyle Plan represents our ESG commitment to fostering more sustainable lifestyle changes for consumers. We aim for consumers to experience peace of mind in leading clean and healthy lives through our products and services.”

After the presentation, participants were invited to join a factory tour of PT KAO Indonesia, guided by the company’s engineering team. This tour allowed participants to observe the production process firsthand, from raw material management to the final products ready for market distribution. Throughout the tour, participants witnessed the technology the company employs and the strict procedures applied to maintain product quality.

The activity continued with a Q&A session led by the MC. During this session, participants actively inquired about various aspects of the production process, innovation, and sustainability measures undertaken by PT KAO Indonesia. This was an opportunity for students to discuss directly with company representatives and gain insights into the future of the cosmetics industry, particularly in terms of environmental sustainability.

Wilson Marcelino Susilo, External Affairs Associate at SBE UI, shared his thoughts on the visit, stating, “This visit allowed me to witness firsthand the production process at PT KAO Indonesia, from raw material management to finished products, providing valuable insights into the innovation and sustainability standards in the cosmetics and personal care industry.”

In a separate interview, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, expressed his thoughts on the event. “Aside from providing valuable insights and experience for students, this visit can also build strong professional relationships between SBE UI SC and PT KAO Indonesia. Through this professional relationship, we hope to create greater career opportunities for FTUI students to become practitioners or researchers in the cosmetics and personal care sector, whether through internship programs, joint research, or direct recruitment,” he said.

SBE UI SC is a student organization affiliated with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), focusing on advancing biological technology through engineering. Founded in 2011, SBE UI SC became the first student chapter in Southeast Asia and the second in Asia. SBE UI SC has grown into one of the largest organizations within the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universitas Indonesia, with 253 active members, under Dr. Kenny Lischer, S.T., M.T.

With the theme “Health & Care,” SBE UI SC is committed to continuously providing educational programs for its members, including webinars, article competitions, campus visits, and company visits. These programs are designed to enrich members’ knowledge and equip them with relevant chemical and biological engineering skills, helping them maximize their potential in a rapidly evolving industry.
