International Seminar: Synthesis of Furfural from Biomass by Prof. Patrick Cognet

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), through the Research Center for Biomass Valorization (RCBV), held an international seminar titled “Synthesis of Furfural from Biomass” on Monday (04/11). The seminar featured Prof. Patrick Cognet from the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, France, as the keynote speaker. This event aimed to expand the knowledge and understanding of the academic and research community in Indonesia regarding the utilization of biomass for the production of renewable chemicals.

Furfural, as one of the products derived from biomass, has attracted significant attention in the chemical industry due to its wide range of applications, including the production of resins, solvents, and environmentally friendly alternative fuels. Furfural also plays a crucial role in the biochemical industry as a precursor in various chemical production processes.

In the seminar, Prof. Cognet presented more efficient and sustainable methods for the synthesis of furfural from biomass. He also shared insights on the latest innovations in biomass conversion and the benefits derived from this approach, particularly in the global effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

“Furfural is key to the green chemical industry. By utilizing biomass, we can create more sustainable chemical products and support a circular economy,” said Prof. Cognet.

FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., also expressed the importance of this seminar as part of FTUI’s efforts to support the development of sustainable research and technology. “This seminar provides an opportunity for us to delve deeper into biomass conversion and the development of environmentally friendly chemical products, in line with our commitment to supporting innovations that can have a positive impact on the environment and society,” said Prof. Heri.

Prof. Cognet is an expert in chemical engineering and biotechnology with extensive research experience in biomass conversion and biorefinery. He currently serves as a professor at the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (INPT), France, which is one of the leading institutions worldwide in the fields of chemical engineering and biotechnology. Prof. Cognet has also published various papers and led research projects focusing on the development of environmentally friendly technologies for converting biomass into value-added products.

This seminar is expected to open more collaboration opportunities between academics, researchers, and industry players to develop more efficient biomass-based technologies. Moving forward, FTUI is committed to continuing as a hub for research and technological development that supports sustainable solutions in the fields of energy and materials.
