FTUI Doctor Develops Collectivity in Architectural Drawing, Opening New Dimensions in Design

Architectural drawing has long been recognized as a bridge between ideas and reality, representing an architect’s vision in physical form. However, research conducted by Defry Agatha Ardianta from Universitas Indonesia introduces a fresh, intriguing perspective. His doctoral promotion was held on December 30, 2024, at the Multimedia Room, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia (FTUI).

In his dissertation titled “Collectivity in Architectural Drawing as an Open Process”, Defry explores the notion that collectivity in drawing is not limited to human actions but can also encompass the complexity of entities, conditions, and time-based collectivity.

Through his research, Defry introduces the idea that drawing is not merely a final product but a dynamic and open-ended process. He employs observational methods and drawing practices, using the exquisite corpse technique to produce collective ideas. His case study focuses on Peneleh Dutch Cemetery in Surabaya, revealing that collectivity involves a dynamic negotiation between fragments and the whole, resulting in more prosperous and diverse outcomes.

“This research reveals the paradoxical characteristics and simultaneity of collectivity in architectural drawing. By exploring key aspects, such as the negotiation between fragments and the whole sequence and the time-based collective condition, this study contributes to advancing our understanding of drawing within the architectural context. The findings expand the discourse of drawing as a dynamic and open process, positioning collectivity as an integral part of architectural representation and design. This enriches design knowledge by presenting collectivity as a framework for both practice and architectural pedagogy,” Defry explained.

The Acting Dean of FTUI, Prof. Mahmud, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation for this dissertation. “Defry Agatha Ardianta’s research introduces a new, relevant approach to the architectural world. The concept of collectivity in drawing enriches the design process and opens the door to broader innovations. I am optimistic that his work will inspire young architects to continue exploring new potentials, creatively collaborate, and create impactful designs,” he said.

As part of his doctoral promotion, Defry Agatha Ardianta held an exhibition titled “Seeing as/Drawing out,” documenting his research findings and curated by Prof. Yandi Andri Yatmo, S.T., Dip.Arch., M.Arch., Ph.D., and Prof. Paramita Atmodiwirjo, S.T., M.Arch., Ph.D., the exhibition explored how drawings can serve as tools for understanding and developing innovative ideas in architecture. Using techniques such as geometric form exploration and scanning processes, the exhibition showcased how drawings can uncover new ideas and expand our understanding of architecture.

Defry Agatha Ardianta’s dissertation on “The Development of Collectivity in Architectural Drawing” earned him a Doctorate in Architecture with a Summa Cum Laude distinction and a perfect GPA of 4.00. He is the 25th doctoral graduate from the Department of Architecture and the 578th doctoral graduate of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia. The doctoral promotion session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., with Prof. Yandi Andri Yatmo, S.T., Dip.Arch., M.Arch., Ph.D. as the principal advisor and Prof. Paramita Atmodiwirjo, S.T., M.Arch., Ph.D. as the co-advisor. The examination committee included Prof. Madya, Dr. Khairul Anwar bin Mohamed Khaidzir, Dr. Ir. Achmad Hery Fuad, M.Eng., Kristanti Dewi Paramita, S.Ars., M.A., Ph.D., Dr. Rini Suryantini, S.T., M.Sc., and Dr. Ferro Yudistira, S.T., M.Ars.
