On Friday (21/2), the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) welcomed a visit from the Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). The meeting was held in the Professors Council Meeting Room, FTUI Dean’s Building, and attended by representatives from FTUI’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, FTUI International Office, as well as the Head of KIST and his delegation.
FTUI representatives included the Manager of Partnerships and International Education, Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D.; Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Agus Sunjarianto Pamitran, S.T., M.Eng.; Head of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Program, Ir. Achmad Riadi, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., IPM; and Director of Human Resources and Talent Development at UI, Dr. Eng. Ir. Muhammad Arif Budiyanto, S.T., M.T., IPM.
Meanwhile, the KIST delegation included Principal Dr. Mahmoud Abdulwahab Alawi; Deputy Principal for Academic, Research, Innovation, and Consultancy, Dr. Khamis Khalid Said; Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Aviation, Ali Hamad Mkali; Head of the Department of Science, Salim A. Makame; Project Manager from the Ministry of Education & Vocational Training, Zanzibar, Salum Mkubwa; and Deputy Permanent Secretary for Administration and Planning at the Ministry of Education & Vocational Training, Zanzibar, Khalid M. Waziri.
The meeting began with an introduction from KIST, where they presented an overview of their institution and outlined the purpose of their visit. Their primary objective was to learn about the organization of the naval architecture and marine engineering education at FTUI. This visit aligns with KIST’s plan to establish a maritime engineering program under its Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Additionally, KIST sought to explore collaboration opportunities with FTUI, particularly in the fields of mechanical engineering, naval architecture, and marine sciences. This initiative is in line with Zanzibar’s efforts to enhance the skills of its younger generation in the blue economy sector.
“The government encourages higher education institutions to strengthen the blue economy sector through education, and FTUI has contributed by establishing the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Program. We hope that FTUI and KIST can establish a collaboration, especially in naval architecture and marine sciences,” said FTUI Dean, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D.
