Department of Industrial Engineering FTUI Showcases Research-Based Innovations at MRT Jakarta Innovation Week 2025

Jakarta, May 24–26, 2025 – The Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), once again demonstrated its strategic role in bridging academia and industry through its active participation in the MRT Jakarta Innovation Week 2025, held under the theme “Game-Changing Innovations: Racing Towards Sustainable Excellence.” In this exhibition, FTUI students presented their Capstone Design Projects, a series of applied research collaborations between the university and PT MRT Jakarta.

The showcased innovations addressed key issues such as the digitalisation of services, inclusivity, sustainability, and enhanced user experience. These projects were developed by 7th-semester undergraduate students of Industrial Engineering UI as part of a project-based learning curriculum, directly targeting real-world industry challenges.

The collaboration between FTUI and MRT Jakarta has been ongoing since 2023 through the Capstone Design Project scheme, in which MRT Jakarta provides real-life challenges that are analyzed and tackled by students using Design Thinking, systems analysis, and various industrial engineering methodologies. Throughout the process, students were guided by FTUI academic supervisors including Prof. Dr.-Ing. Amalia Suzianti, S.T., M.Sc.; Dr.rer.pol. Ir. Romadhani Ardi, S.T., M.T.; Billy Muhamad Iqbal, S.Ds., M.T.; Ir. Erlinda Muslim, MEE., IPU.; and Safira Nurul Fathia, MSc., as well as professional teams from MRT Jakarta. The collaboration involved field visits and intensive consultation sessions.

“Students were actively involved from start to finish in developing their solutions. This project serves as both an application of their academic knowledge and a platform for building professional character, as they must work in teams and present their outcomes to MRT Jakarta stakeholders,” explained Prof. Dr.-Ing. Amalia Suzianti, one of the supervising lecturers.

Several student-developed prototypes have now entered the trial and refinement stage, particularly in areas such as UX design for the MRT Jakarta application, sustainability-based features, and inclusive solutions for persons with disabilities. These outcomes demonstrate that Capstone Design Projects are more than just academic assignments—they have tangible and practical impacts for industry partners.

Throughout the exhibition, the works of FTUI Industrial Engineering students received positive responses from attendees of MRT Jakarta Innovation Week. The general public and MRT users actively engaged in discussions and explored the ideas presented, proving that academic-industry collaborations can generate impactful innovations in public service.

“The participation of FTUI Industrial Engineering students in MRT Jakarta Innovation Week 2025 is clear evidence that collaboration between academia and industry can produce innovative, applicable solutions with real impact for society. We deeply appreciate the enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication shown by the students and supervising faculty in addressing real-world public transportation challenges,” said Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of FTUI.

By participating in this event, the Department of Industrial Engineering at FTUI reaffirms its commitment to producing graduates who are adaptable, solution-oriented, and prepared to face the challenges of digital transformation and sustainable development in Indonesia.
