FTUI Expands Academic Network with Leading Universities in China

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), conducted a series of academic visits to several prominent universities and institutions in China to strengthen international collaboration in the academic field. This initiative is part of FTUI’s strategy to broaden global partnerships while opening opportunities for students and faculty through exchange programs, joint research, and cross-country innovation.

The eight-day visit (2–9 November 2025) was led by the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, M.Eng., M.Sc., accompanied by Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., FTUI Manager for Partnership and International Education. The FTUI delegation met with ten higher education and industrial institutions across several cities in China, including Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), Tianjin University, Tsinghua University, Aubo Robotics, South East University, China Design Group (CDG), Zhejiang Normal University (ZNU), ZNU Senior High School, Zhejiang University, and Jiangsu Huibo.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, stated that the visit represents FTUI’s strategic move to enhance academic reputation and broaden global exposure.
“Visiting various universities in China opens extensive collaboration opportunities—not only in research and education but also in the development of innovation and technologies with real impact. We hope this partnership will serve as a bridge for FTUI students, lecturers, and researchers to contribute to a strong international research network,” said Prof. Kemas.

At Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), FTUI explored potential collaboration in Artificial Intelligence, Network and Information Security, and Electronic Information Technology. Both institutions also discussed partnership schemes covering undergraduate to master’s programs, particularly in railway engineering.

The meeting with Tianjin University focused on collaboration in energy, architecture, and environmental studies. Tianjin University also offered access to its structural and geotechnical laboratory facilities for FTUI student researchers. This collaboration will be followed up through the signing of a Letter of Agreement (LoA).

At Tsinghua University – School of Environment, discussions centered on organizing a summer course supported by scholarships for FTUI Environmental Engineering students. The two parties also explored opportunities for joint research and the development of a joint degree program expected to commence next year.

FTUI also visited Aubo Robotics to explore module development and training programs in robotics, supporting efforts to strengthen FTUI’s robotics laboratory.

Meanwhile, South East University offered short-term programs, including a three-month summer school and internship opportunities with China Design Group (CDG). Both institutions discussed joint research in Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), energy, infrastructure, and autonomous vehicles. Following the signing of the LoA between FTUI and CDG, formal collaboration with Southeast University will proceed.

At China Design Group (CDG), FTUI officially signed an LoA to support a tripartite collaboration with Southeast University. This partnership will focus on developing educational tools in construction engineering and transport infrastructure research.

A productive outcome also emerged from the visit to Zhejiang Normal University (ZNU), resulting in the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a double-degree collaboration. ZNU plans to send its students for a one-semester study program at UI and initiate the establishment of a Center of China Studies and a joint language center with UI. The FTUI team also conducted a promotion of the International Class (KKI) at ZNU Senior High School. Additionally, discussions included the possibility of launching a joint degree program enabling ZNU students to gain international experience at FTUI.

The meeting with Zhejiang University focused on student exchange opportunities through a one-semester integrated study abroad program. Zhejiang University also invited FTUI students to participate in its international classes on Sustainable and Smart Cities.

Concluding the series of visits, FTUI met with Jiangsu Huibo to explore collaboration in robotics certification and training programs, including knowledge transfer initiatives to enhance human resource competencies in robotics technologies. Through these visits, FTUI reaffirms its commitment as a leading engineering faculty actively engaged in global collaboration.
