The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), welcomed a delegation from Jinan University, China, at the FTUI Dean’s Building, 2nd Floor, on Monday, August 24, 2026. The meeting discussed various opportunities for international collaboration between the two institutions, ranging from joint and dual degree programs to student and faculty mobility schemes. The visit served as part of efforts to strengthen the existing partnership established through a general Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FTUI and Jinan University, which has been in effect from 2023 to 2031.
The Jinan University delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Yong Wang, Dean of the International School, accompanied by Associate Prof. Ying Li, Assistant Dean of the International School; Prof. Zhen Zhang, Deputy Director of the Department of Food Science and Engineering; Zhan Shu, Office Director of the China-Malaysia “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory on Oil Processing and Safety; and Yujin Chen, Sector Chief of the Graduate School. The delegation was welcomed by FTUI Dean Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., alongside FTUI Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Ir. Akhmad Herman Yuwono, M.Phil.Eng.; FTUI Manager of International Partnerships and Education Ir. Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D.; as well as representatives from the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering at FTUI.
The meeting began with a presentation by FTUI Dean Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan on FTUI’s profile and several potential areas of collaboration that could be explored by the two institutions, including joint and dual degree programs and international short programs. The Jinan University delegation then presented an overview of their institution. Jinan University is recognized as the first university in China to admit international students and currently has 33,561 undergraduate students and 17,603 master’s and doctoral students, including 2,250 international students. In international rankings, Jinan University is placed among the top 38 universities in the QS World University Rankings: China Mainland 2026 and ranked 126th in the THE Asia University Rankings 2025.
Through its International School, which offers eight undergraduate programs, two master’s programs, and one doctoral program taught in English, Jinan University has established several international partnerships. These include a dual degree program through the Jinan University–University of Birmingham Joint Institute, a 3+1 fast-track bachelor’s-to-master’s program with University College Dublin, and a joint research laboratory with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), supported by government funding from both countries.
As a follow-up to the meeting, the two institutions will explore the possibility of establishing a 1+1 master’s program in Bioprocess Engineering, as well as dual degree schemes for undergraduate programs in Bioprocess Engineering and Materials Science. Jinan University also expressed its readiness to provide funding for student and faculty mobility to support the implementation of these collaborative initiatives.
The meeting concluded with a gift exchange between the two institutions and a group photo session, marking the commitment of FTUI and Jinan University to further explore opportunities for collaboration in education and research in the future.
