On Thursday (22/2), the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (DTMM), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), hosted Assoc. Prof. Su-Mi Hur as a guest lecturer. Attended by 47 students in room GK 305, GK Building FTUI, this guest lecture addressed the topic “Thermodynamics of Mixing” and discussed the advancements in polymer technology. Assoc. Prof. Su-Mi Hur is an Associate Professor from the School of Polymer Science and Engineering at Chonnam National University, Korea.
In her lecture, Su-Mi Hur explained the Flory-Huggins Solution Theory, a thermodynamic lattice model of polymer solution that accounts for significant differences in molecular sizes in adapting the conventional expression for mixing entropy. The result is the equation for the Gibbs free energy change for the mixing of polymers with solvents.
“Ideally, we want a general approach that can handle binary polymer-polymer solutions as well as polymer solvent solutions. To do this, we will follow the Flory-Huggins Theory method and employ a lattice approach with mean-field approximations as we do for regular solution theory. We will calculate mixing entropy and mixing energy and combine these terms to develop the formulation of free energy of mixing,” explained Su-Mi Hur.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, emphasized the importance of gaining insights from international collaborative partners to provide students with a deeper understanding of teaching patterns and content. “Through this collaboration, I hope that students can gain a more comprehensive overview of the applied teaching methods, creating a richer and more diverse learning environment.”
Dr. Jaka Fajar Fatriansyah explained that this guest lecture is one of the initiatives within the framework of the collaboration program between the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), and Chonnam University, focusing on research and education development. In the context of this collaboration, the Faculty Mobility Program he leads marks a joint commitment to deepen involvement in scientific exchange and improve the quality of education in both institutions.
