BEM FTUI Holds Peer Counseling Training to Enhance Student Welfare Services

To improve student welfare services, the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (BEM FTUI) held a peer counselling training session on Saturday (6/8). The event took place at the FTUI Building S and was attended by 50 students from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 cohorts, including members of the Daily Management Board (BPH) Kesma/Sosma IMD/IMPI and the Welfare Division of BEM FTUI.

The peer counselling training was facilitated by U-Shape, a training community established by students from the Faculty of Psychology at UI. The speakers who delivered the material included Aurelia Ardhani Nathania, Nurizzah Syadza Royan, Magna Carta Amara Putri, and Stacya Wijaya. The content covered the basics of peer counselling and psychological first aid, which are crucial for supporting fellow students in need of emotional assistance.

The training was divided into two main segments: training material delivery and hands-on case practice. In the workshop session, participants received in-depth knowledge about the basic concepts of peer counselling, including how to be a good listener and provide appropriate support to fellow students. During the hands-on case session, participants had the opportunity to practice handling simulated role-play situations as observers, clients, and peer counsellors. This session was guided and directly evaluated by the speakers.

The primary goal of this training was to equip participants with knowledge on how to act as effective counsellors and provide support to students in need of someone to talk to. It is hoped that this training will boost the confidence of FTUI students to share their stories without fear of their identities being exposed.

Additionally, the training aimed to provide accurate information to participants about the concept of peer counselling and the role of peer counsellors. Participants were also taught how to handle cases that might arise during peer counselling sessions and how to behave appropriately as peer counsellors. The material emphasized the importance of openness in addressing issues and providing motivation and support so that students feel free to share and express themselves to find the best solutions.

On a separate occasion, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, expressed his appreciation for BEM FTUI’s initiative in organizing the peer counselling training. “In an academic world full of challenges, emotional and mental support is very much needed. This peer counselling training initiative is a concrete step by BEM FTUI to create a community of students who support each other in facing various pressures and problems that may arise during their studies,” said Prof. Heri.
