“Sexual violence cases are increasing. Most experienced by women, according to KemenPPPA data which shows an increase in reports over the last 3 years. To overcome this, on April 12, 2022, the government officially passed the Act on Sexual Violence (UU TPKS) to provide a protection framework for victims of sexual violence,” said Drs. Bambang Gunawan, M.Sc. as Director of Information and Political Communication, Law and Security of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia in his Address as well as opening the Digital Literacy and Human Rights Forum (FIRTUAL), Friday, 22 April 2022.
Sexual violence and physical and/or sexual violence have increased in the past year. 1 in 4 women aged 15-64 years in Indonesia has experienced physical and/or sexual violence at the hands of a partner or non-partner in their life. Assistant Deputy for Services for Women Victims of Violence at the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Margareth Robin Korwa, SH, MH. conveyed a quote from R.A.Kartini in his material: “How big is the difference in Indonesian society when women are well educated and with the needs of women themselves. We look forward to learning and education given because it will make her happy.”
Dr. Lidwina Inge Nurtjahyo, S.H., M.H. from the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia, explained the views and role of universities in preventing violence against women, explaining that the violence stems from an unequal balance of power between the sexes. This also includes sexual violence. Violation of a person’s human rights, especially those relating to the protection of personal data. “Perhaps it is only now in our history that the issue of violence against women and children has surfaced. Actually, it has been a long time. it’s like an iceberg, so we only see the tip of it,” said Dr. Inge in his material.
Director General of Human Rights, Kemenkumham RI, Dr. Mualimin Abdi, SH, MH on this occasion explained the Act on Sexual Violence (UU TPKS) as a legal framework for victims of sexual violence which aims to prevent all forms of sexual violence; to support, protect and rescue victims; carry out criminal prosecutions and rehabilitate perpetrators; create an environment free from sexual violence and ensure that sexual violence does not recur.
In addition, rapper and lecturer Yacko Oktaviana SE., BBA (Hons.), MBA expressed a call to stop violence against women and speak up when they are victims of violence. As stated in the material, we can use the 5D method when we detect sexual harassment in a public space, i.e. diverted, reported, documented, reprimanded and pacified.
The existence of the TPKS Law is of course intended to help the victims until this case can be resolved and it is also hoped that there will be no more victim blaming. Then also the existence of the TPKS law can demand the right to treatment, the right to protection and also the right to a safe recovery for the victim.
“Policies to reduce sexual violence have also been taken, including prioritizing prevention, improving the reporting system as well as accurate complaint services, and improving case management so that cases of sexual violence can be resolved quickly,” said Margareth Robin Korwa, SH, MH closing the session.
Met on a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU said that this event aims to increase public understanding of the government’s efforts to provide legal protection to women in particular and to increase awareness of women’s rights, by commemorating Kartini Day.
The seminar with the theme “Kartini Day “Strengthening Legal Protection and Human Rights for Women” is the result of collaboration between CEP CCIT FTUI and the Directorate of Political Information and Communication, Law and Security, Directorate General of Information and Public Communication, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (DJIKP KOMINFO RI ) took place at Auditorium K301, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia and broadcast live via Zoom Meeting and the djikp YouTube channel.
