Faculty of Engineering UI Wins First Place in the Best Engineering Campus in Indonesia Based on THE WUR 2023

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) made a proud achievement. Based on an assessment conducted by the Times Higher Education (THE) world university rating agency, FTUI occupies the first position in Indonesia as the best university in Indonesia in the field of Engineering. This ranking list has just been released by THE World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2023 by Subject (26/10/2022).

In Southeast Asia, UI is ranked 13 out of 60 institutions in Southeast Asia that participated in the ranking field of Engineering. UI is the only university from Indonesia that managed to enter the top 15 in Southeast Asia, beating Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia), ITB, Chiang Mai University (Thailand), UGM, and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). THE WUR 2023 for Engineering covers general engineering, civil engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and chemical engineering. In this field of science, this year THE conducted an assessment of 1306 universities, more than last year’s 1188.

FTUI excels in Indonesia with an overall score of 26.3-31.9, and is ranked 601-800 in the world. In the industry income indicator, FTUI obtained the highest score out of 4 other indicators with a score of 80.6. When compared to other universities in Indonesia, FTUI ranks first in Indonesia on the International Outlook and Teaching indicators.

13 indicators are used to measure performance in four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. The 13 performance indicators are carefully calibrated to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparison, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry, and government.

Of the 13 performance indicators, THE groups into five areas, namely teaching or learning environment (weight 30%), research which includes number, income, and reputation (weight 30%), the citation which describes the acknowledgment of research results (weight 27.5% ), the international outlook from teaching staff, students and research (weight 7.5%), and industry income from knowledge transfer (weight 5%).

The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU expressed his pride in this achievement. “The results of THE WUR 2023 ranking are the outcome of the hard work of all FTUI academics, especially the lecturers. In particular, FTUI stands out in the Teaching criteria and International Outlook which indicates the success of FTUI’s efforts to excel internally and have an external impact. This achievement is of course we are grateful for, but it doesn’t stop there. We will use this achievement as a basic foundation for future improvements, especially to improve assessments on other criteria, especially citations. In the future, we will continue to facilitate and encourage FTUI lecturers, especially lecturers young people, to increase publications, especially publications that involve collaboration with international researchers.”

Currently, FTUI has 7,938 students from undergraduate to doctoral levels. FTUI is supported by 250 lecturers of which more than 84% of lecturers have doctoral degrees from various universities abroad. The number of FTUI Professors, 73 people, is the highest compared to other faculties at UI. FTUI has 13 undergraduate study programs, 2 professional programs, 7 master study programs, and 7 FTUI doctoral study programs that have been accredited as Superior from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education and LAM TEKNIK at the national level as well as IABEE and JABEE at the international level. FTUI has also been assessed by a regional assessment agency, the ASEAN University Network.

THE World University Rankings is a global performance table that rates research-intensive universities on all of their core missions including teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. THE WUR uses a standardized approach for each indicator and then combines the indicators in the proportion of performance indicators. The standardization approach used is based on the distribution of data in certain indicators, where THE calculates the cumulative probability function and evaluates the indicators of certain institutions within that function.
