Three students of the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) class of 2018 designed an abandoned green area in the Cikini number as a creative urban space. Nadya Fatin Nur Rahma Sultan, Ariq Dhia Athallah, and Gusti Ayu Putu Nadya who are members of NARANA architect designed a creative space in the Cikini area called “Cikini Creative Cubes.”
“Cikini Creative Cubes exists as a creative urban space that directly unites actors and art connoisseurs through interactivity and centralized landscape connectivity. Activate the abandoned green space under the railroad tracks with a modular pixel grid so that it can flexibly continue to grow and adapt to accommodate artistic activities,” said Nadya as team leader of the NARANA architect team.
“Cikini Creative Cubes has a site management concept with a pixelating system that allows this design to be adaptive in response to permaculture values. We built this grid centered in the center so that the development of various community strategies can be carried out in the amphitheater. In addition, at the entrance area, an assembled grid is formed as a wayfinding strategy. The cubes will function as a stage, a co-working place, a convenience store, an exhibition space, and a place for discussion,” said Ariq.
Located with the city center, residential center, and office, Cikini Creative Cubes does not try to separate the green area from the activity area. The green area is not left alone, however, activated as an art container. It becomes the object of art itself.
“We are trying to unite the Cikini community so that they can gather, interact, and greet each other in this Cikini Creative Cubes. Through Cikini Creative Cubes, we also want to increase the interest of creative space visitors by including creative space programs on abandoned sites that are passed by pedestrians. Not only that, but we also want to build a relationship between Cikini residents and nature, namely through the continuity of green spaces in the Cikini area,” added Gusti Ayu.
Thanks to the design, the NArana architect team won the 1st Honorable Mention out of 101 teams that participated in the national competition at the Urban Creative Space: Scala Nasional Landscape Design Competition 2021. This year’s UDAYANA SCALE took the theme “Urban Creatives Space: Human’s response to Environment, Culture, and Creative Space” which prioritizes permaculture and ecological approaches. Each competition participant is asked to design a landscape area with a total area of 2000 m2 that can accommodate creative needs as a solution to the issues that exist in the chosen site.
