Commemorating World Mental Health Day, the FTUI Student Executive Board Holds an Educational Seminar

The Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), organized a series of events themed “Inside Out: Navigating the Complexities of Human Emotions” to commemorate World Mental Health Day (WMHD) 2024. Held on Tuesday, October 10, 2024, the event aimed to help students explore and understand the complexities of human emotions through various interactive activities, self-reflection booths, and a mental health seminar.

Dr. rer. pol. Romadhani Ardi, S.T., M.T., FTUI’s Manager of Student Affairs, Research, and Community Service, stated that the theme was chosen to explore and understand the range of human emotions and emphasize that all emotions, whether positive or negative, play a crucial role in daily life. “Through this event, we hope students can recognize, accept, and healthily express their emotions,” he said.

The event series began with booths from each department in FTUI, located in the lobby of Building K. Each booth represented an emotion inspired by the animated film Inside Out. These booths not only served as a place for self-reflection but also offered interactive activities for students. Additionally, the event featured a photo booth and a board of hopes, where students could provide moral support to one another. The activities were enlivened by the distribution of affection in the form of candies, accompanied by encouraging messages for FTUI students.

The evening continued with a mental health seminar held in Room K.301, featuring psychiatrist Dr. Zulvia Oktanida Syarif, Sp. KJ., as the keynote speaker. In her presentation, Dr. Zulvia provided education on mental health, focusing on emotions and trauma. She also stressed the importance of maintaining mental health and strategies for managing stress and academic pressures. Through this seminar, students were expected to gain insights into the significance of understanding and managing their emotions healthily.

In a separate interview, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., Dean of FTUI, expressed his appreciation for BEM FTUI’s initiative in organizing this event. “Mental health is a vital foundation for students’ well-being and productivity. Awareness of the importance of mental health must continue to be raised, as mental health is a fundamental right everyone should have. Through this event, we hope students will better understand and manage their emotions and support each other,” he remarked.

World Mental Health Day was first commemorated on October 10, 1992, by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) in response to the growing need to address mental health on a global scale. This day was established due to the recognition that mental health issues are often overlooked and do not receive the same attention as physical health. It is now observed annually to raise global awareness about the importance of mental health and reduce the negative stigma still attached to mental health issues.
