On Thursday (September 5), the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) welcomed a delegation from Cranfield University. Dr. Agusmian Ompusunggu represented Cranfield University and was received by several representatives from FTUI, including Prof. Dr. Ir. Adi Surjosatyo, M.Eng, Dr. Eng. Mohammad Akita Indianto, S.T., M.Eng., Prof. Dr. Ir. Anne Zulfia Syahrial, M.Sc., Dr. Ir. Bambang Priyono, M.Sc., Eny Kusrini, S.Si., Ph.D., and Sheila Tobing, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D. The visit was held at the MRC Building, 3rd Floor, FTUI.
During the visit, Agusmian brought a mission to establish collaboration with FTUI in the field of Aerospace Engineering. Agusmian hopes the collaboration will focus on research and education. According to him, PT Boeing Indonesia, now operating in Indonesia, requires experts in aerospace engineering and has established partnerships with Cranfield University for this purpose. Consequently, Cranfield University is open to collaborating with FTUI to produce competent graduates in Aerospace Engineering.
Agusmian explained that Cranfield University has several advantages in education, including Master’s and Doctoral programs, intensive industry collaboration, a low student-to-faculty ratio, and its airport.
Agusmian also presented the Centre for Life-cycle Engineering and Management (CLEM), an advanced research centre specializing in managing the design, manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life phases of systems. CLEM includes five research groups: Damage Mechanics, Mesoscale Materials, Non-Destructive Inspection, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and Automation and Maintenance Management.
Acting Dean of FTUI, Prof. Ir. Mahmud Sudibandriyo, M.Sc., Ph.D., stated, “This visit is a crucial step in expanding our collaboration in Aerospace Engineering, a sector increasingly vital in global technology and industry development. With Cranfield University’s internationally recognized expertise and reputation, we believe this collaboration will be highly beneficial for both institutions. We look forward to developing joint initiatives, from applied research to educational programs, that will enrich our students’ academic and professional experiences. This spirit of partnership reflects FTUI’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of technological innovation and global human resource development.”
In addition to research collaboration, Cranfield University also aims to establish educational partnerships with FTUI. This collaboration could include dual-degree Master’s programs and sending graduate students for a semester to Cranfield University for thesis research. This commitment is formalized through the initiation of an MoU between Cranfield University and UI. After Agusmian’s presentation, the event continued with a Q&A session with FTUI representatives and concluded with lunch and a group photo.
