Doctor of Industrial Engineering from FTUI Develops Sustainable Logistics Model to Enhance Logistics Services in Indonesia

To develop a more sustainable logistics system, Maryadi Tirtana Siregar, a Doctoral Program student in Industrial Engineering at FTUI, has conducted the research presented in his doctoral dissertation titled “Development of a Sustainable Logistics Model for Logistics Service Companies in Indonesia.” Maryadi delivered his dissertation during an open doctoral promotion session on Thursday (04/07) at the Auditorium of the Department of Industrial Engineering, FTUI.

The research aims to identify and analyze the internal and external factors that play a significant role in achieving sustainable logistics performance in Indonesia. Considering the importance of logistics in supporting economic growth and trade, as well as its environmental impact, this research is relevant for creating solutions that can support sustainable development in this sector.

Maryadi used a mixed-methods approach, combining comprehensive literature reviews with in-depth interviews with industry experts. Through literature analysis, Maryadi identified four main dimensions contributing to sustainable logistics: environmental, economic, social, and consumer. The study employs several statistical analysis methods, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).

Through PCA, it was found that almost all indicators support sustainable logistics factors. LDA results indicated that in the category of sustainable logistics, compliance with the KIR test for vehicles has the most significant influence, emphasizing the importance of vehicle emissions management as part of efforts to achieve more environmentally friendly logistics.

SEM showed that all four dimensions—economic, social, environmental, and consumer—have a positive influence on sustainable logistics performance. This indicates that economic factors such as cost efficiency and reliability, social factors such as corporate social responsibility, environmental factors such as emission reductions, and consumer factors such as customer satisfaction all play crucial roles in shaping sustainable logistics practices.

Projections over the next 20 years (2020-2040) show that the sustainable logistics model developed in this research will continue to increase in value each year. This indicates that the adoption of sustainable logistics practices can bring significant economic benefits in the long term while also reducing negative environmental impacts.

Maryadi also acknowledged the limitations of his research. The data used primarily came from logistics service companies in the courier package and urban e-commerce categories. Therefore, he recommends that further research be conducted to include other categories of logistics companies and to expand the research focus on various other aspects affecting logistics services, such as inventory management, warehouse management, distribution, and transportation.

This research is expected to serve as an important reference for developing sustainable development concepts in the logistics industry in Indonesia. Maryadi emphasized that these findings will not only help logistics companies improve service quality and customer satisfaction but also support global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of logistics activities. Thus, this research significantly contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.

With his dissertation, Maryadi earned a Doctorate in Industrial Engineering with cum laude honours and a GPA of 3.79. Dr. Maryadi became the 21st doctoral graduate in the Industrial Engineering Program and the 558th graduate from FTUI.

The promotion session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Winarto, M.Sc., with promoter Prof. Dr. Ir. T. Yuri M. Zagloel, M.Eng., M.Sc., and co-promoter Dr. Ir. Andri D. Setiawan, S.T., M.Sc., IPU, along with examiners Prof. Firdaus Alamsjah, Ph.D., Dr. Komarudin, S.T., M.Eng., Dr. Ir.
