Doctoral Promotion of Arsyad Ramadhan Darlis: Development of Human and Animal Classification Methods Using Deep Learning Neural Network and Mmwave Radar

Arsyad Ramadhan Darlis, a doctoral student in the Electrical Engineering program at FTUI, attempted to develop methods for classifying humans and animals using technology. This research was presented in a dissertation during the Open Doctoral Promotion Session at FTUI held on Friday (12/1) in the Smart Meeting Room, FTUI Dean’s Building.

In this dissertation, Arsyad Ramadhan Darlis attempted to classify humans and animals to improve the success rate of rescuers in post-disaster victim retrieval by distinguishing human victims from non-human objects, which often cause misinterpretation errors (false alarms) in areas where visual senses cannot assist.

“In conditions where human detection is carried out after a disaster, devices and systems with high accuracy and efficiency are needed. In such conditions, interference from non-human objects becomes a problematic factor. This can disrupt the process of detecting the presence of humans under rubble, where false alarms can occur, leading to inaccuracies in detecting human conditions. Therefore, a system is needed that can classify humans and non-human objects, especially animals,” Arsyad explained regarding the background of his research.

Arsyad’s research proposed the classification of humans and animals that can also be applied to human health monitoring conditions in post-disaster victim rescue operations. In using contactless monitoring devices in such applications, vital organ vibrations of some animals are also detected because some of these animals have characteristics similar to humans.

“This will be a problem where optimal sensors are needed to detect human and animal characteristics, and also an efficient method to classify humans and animals. With the existence of a human and animal classification system, it is expected to save resources, and time, and prioritize effectively during human detection in post-disaster conditions,” Arsyad said in his presentation.

In this research, the characteristics of humans and animals were obtained using mmwave radar sensors, which have several advantages compared to other sensors, especially in penetrating materials. The target will receive signals sent from the radar, and the echo signals will be received back by the sensor for further preprocessing. In this research, a method based on dual-receiver mmWave radar and bispectrum analysis was used as a new method in feature extraction, resulting in images that represent the characteristics of humans and animals.

FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU, stated, “The classification process with the method used in this research shows results with an accuracy level far beyond the classification process using methods in previous research. Through these results, it is expected to help rescuers in post-disaster victim retrieval more effectively.”

Prof. Meilinda Nurbanasari, Ph.D., Rector of the National Institute of Technology (Itenas) Bandung, who attended this promotion session, said in her address, “I see that Arsyad has extraordinary motivation. The success of Arsyad is expected to encourage lecturers at Itenas to continue their education to the doctoral level.”

In addition to Prof. Meilinda Nurbanasari, several VIP guests also attended this doctoral promotion session. Among them were Prof. Andi Adriansyah, Ph.D., Rector of Mercubuana University, Prof. Tarsisius Kristyadi, Ph.D., Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Itenas Bandung, Prof. Dr. Waluyo, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Itenas Bandung, Dr.sc. Lisa Kristiana, Chair of the Informatics Study Program, Itenas Bandung, Ratna Susana, M.T., Chair of the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Itenas Bandung, and Lecturers from the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Itenas Bandung.

Through this dissertation, Arsyad Ramadhan Darlis successfully obtained a doctoral degree with Cumlaude honors with a GPA of 3.95. He is the 167th doctoral graduate from the Department of Electrical Engineering and the 535th from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia.
