Doctoral Promotion of Mulia Orientilize: Investigating the Strength of Spun Pile Connection with Pile Cap

In the international arena, the design of foundation structures is gradually transitioning to performance-based design (PBD). However, there has been no research in Indonesia that examines the strength of a spun pile connected to a pile cap. Nevertheless, at some point, Indonesia needs to shift towards PBD, making research on the behaviour of spun pile-pile cap connections essential.

Mulia Orientilize, a doctoral student in the Civil Engineering program at UI, addressed this challenge in his dissertation titled “Performance Study of Spun Pile-Pile Cap Connection with Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP).” The dissertation explains the behaviour of the spun pile-pile cap connection. This research by Mulia Orientilize is an innovative contribution to the field of civil engineering and was presented at the open defence for the doctoral promotion of the Department of Civil Engineering at FTUI (19/01).

Mulia Orientilize stated, “An examination of the performance of pile and pile cap connections must be conducted to gain a deep understanding, considering the shift towards PBD. The conclusion drawn is that spun piles with limitations in spiral reinforcement and with typical connections to pile caps used in Indonesia exhibit detailed behaviour and have good repairability.”

“This cutting-edge research on the behaviour of spun pile-pile cap connections is expected to complement studies that have not been conducted before in the field of civil engineering. Moreover, the research conducted by Mulia Orientilize can serve as inspiration for other researchers to create similar innovations,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, Dean of FTUI.

Mulia Orientilize earned his doctoral degree with a GPA of 3.95 and the predicate of Very Satisfactory in this doctoral promotion defence. He is the 70th doctoral graduate from the Department of Civil Engineering and the 540th doctoral graduate from FTUI. The doctoral defence for Mulia Orientilize was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., with Prof. Ir. Widjojo Adi Prakoso, M.Sc, Ph.D as the main supervisor and Dr. Ir. Yuskar Lase, DEA as the co-supervisor. The examination committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc.; Ayomi Dita Rarasati, S.T., M.T., Ph.D; Prof. Dr. Ir. Heru Purnomo, DEA.; Prof. Dr. Ir. Tommy Ilyas, M.Eng.; Dr. Ing., Josia Irwan Rastandi, ST, MT.; Prof. Ir. Priyo Suprobo, M.Sc, Ph.D.
