Dr. Igor Martek from Deakin University Shares Strategies for International Construction Success in FTUI Guest Lecture

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (DTS FTUI), in collaboration with the Infrastructure Construction and Management Research Group from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at ITB, held a guest lecture titled “Managing Business Construction Around the World.” The lecture took place on Thursday (10/24) in the Smart Meeting Room at the FTUI Dean’s Building, featuring Dr. Igor Martek from Deakin University, Australia, as the speaker. The attendees included undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students of Civil Engineering at FTUI, with Dr. Mustika Sari, S.Ars, M.T., a lecturer from FTUI’s Civil Engineering, serving as the moderator.

Dr. Igor began his session by explaining how strategic thinking can shape the long-term impact on companies and industries. Drawing from his extensive experience managing major capital projects worldwide, he shared key points on effective project management.

“In the world of international construction, a project’s success relies heavily on a deep understanding of five localization parameters: regulations and permits, geographical conditions, local culture, material resources, and workforce skills. Adapting to each of these factors is not just a requirement but the key to creating sustainable and efficient solutions in the global market,” said Dr. Igor Martek.

By addressing these five parameters, he has successfully managed large-scale capital projects globally, enhancing project success and efficiency while minimizing risks associated with local incompatibilities.

“This guest lecture underscores the importance of understanding diverse global landscapes in construction management. Learning from international practices provides our students with valuable insights to create adaptive and sustainable solutions that meet regulatory, cultural, and environmental needs. Collaborations like this strengthen our commitment to producing graduates ready to lead in the global construction industry,” stated Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU, Dean of FTUI.

Dr. Igor Martek is currently an academic at Deakin University, Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture (Hons.) and a Doctorate from the University of Melbourne. He also earned an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management at the University of NSW and an MA in International Relations from the Australian National University, Canberra.

He has extensive experience in the industry, evaluating, planning, and managing major capital projects in various locations worldwide. His work spans Europe, including Eastern Europe, the Maghreb, the Levant, China, Korea, and Singapore. In Kuwait, he worked for the Ministry of Finance, assessing and developing global development projects funded by the Kuwait Fund. He spent ten years in Japan and Korea as the Managing Director of Far East operations for a British consultancy.
