FTUI and Hochschule Bremen Strengthen Global Academic Collaboration

As part of its efforts to expand international networks and partnerships, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), welcomed a delegation from Hochschule Bremen (HS Bremen) on Wednesday (07/05) at the Professors’ Lounge, FTUI Dean’s Building. This meeting was a strategic move to renew and strengthen the bilateral cooperation between the two institutions, which had previously collaborated through a student exchange program involving the Department of Architecture at FTUI.

The discussions during the meeting focused on the potential development of academic collaborations, particularly student exchange programs at the undergraduate and master’s levels. Courses at Hochschule Bremen are primarily conducted in English; however, in programs such as Architecture, a bilingual approach (English and German) is possible due to the studio-based learning format. Beyond student exchange, the collaboration could also be developed as a joint studio between FTUI and HS Bremen to enhance the international dimension of teaching and project-based design.

Hochschule Bremen is one of Germany’s leading universities of applied sciences, known for its practical approach to higher education. The university has four faculties: the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering; the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences; the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences; and the Faculty of Maritime Studies. HS Bremen’s academic environment is recognized for its strong support for international collaboration, especially in engineering and applied design.

Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Manager of Partnerships and International Education at FTUI, emphasized that this partnership is a strategic opportunity to strengthen institutional ties and enrich students’ academic and cultural experiences. “We believe that international collaborations like this are a valuable experience for FTUI students. Through this exchange program, students learn in classrooms and engage with different cultures and education systems. We are very open to exploring other forms of collaboration, such as joint studios and collaborative research projects. Our focus is to create learning experiences relevant to the current challenges of industry and global society.”

FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., also appreciated the collaborative opportunity. “This meeting as a positive step toward building more dynamic and practical partnerships. Our students will have the opportunity to learn across cultures and systems, and I believe this will strengthen their character and broaden their perspectives as future global engineers. We hope this cooperation will soon materialize in concrete forms, whether through student exchange or other academic and research collaborations.”
