FTUI and Universiti Malaya Strengthen International Cooperation in Education

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), continues to strengthen its commitment to developing international collaboration through a working visit to Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia, on Wednesday (June 18). During the visit, the FTUI delegation held discussions with university leadership, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Built Environment at Universiti Malaya to explore opportunities for collaboration in education, research, and student mobility.

The discussions were constructive and reflected a strong spirit of collaboration between the two institutions, both of which have student populations exceeding 44,000. Approximately 10% of UM students are international, with the majority coming from Indonesia and China.

During the meeting, both parties agreed to explore the development of double degree programs at all levels of education—undergraduate (Bachelor’s), graduate (Master’s), and doctoral (PhD). Initial discussions will focus on several study programs, such as chemical engineering and civil engineering (construction management), which will soon be followed up with a double degree implementation.

In addition to long-term programs, UM also offers a long-term student mobility scheme for undergraduate students. For Master’s and PhD levels, the collaboration will be expanded to include research activities and co-supervision of theses. Beyond long-term mobility, FTUI and UM also agreed to develop short-term mobility programs, such as short courses or one-semester exchanges, which are planned to be funded by Universiti Malaya. These programs are expected to commence next year.

“We warmly welcome Universiti Malaya’s collaborative spirit and see great potential in strengthening our strategic partnership in engineering education, research, and student capacity development. Through initiatives such as double degree programs, joint research, and student mobility, we hope to continue producing graduates from both FTUI and UM who are ready to meet global challenges, said Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of FTUI.

Outside of academic collaboration, Universiti Malaya also expressed interest in learning about the development of student startup ecosystems at UI. This opens up opportunities for knowledge exchange and best practices in the fields of student innovation and entrepreneurship.

“We are very open to building a closer partnership with FTUI in areas such as student mobility, joint research, and institutional capacity building. FTUI is a strategic partner of ours from Indonesia, and we look forward to realizing these initiatives through concrete programs for students and faculty, said Prof. Dr. Andri Andriyani, Director of the International Relations Centre, Universiti Malaya.

On this occasion, FTUI also gained insights into Malaysia’s higher education internationalisation strategies through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), a body under the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education that serves as the global marketing and promotion centre for Malaysian higher education.

The FTUI delegation was led by the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., accompanied by Dr. Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., FTUI’s Manager of Partnerships and International Education.

Representatives from Universiti Malaya present at the discussion included:

  • Prof. Dr. Andri Andriyani (Director, International Relations Centre – IRC)
  • Prof. Sr Dr. Faizul Azli Mohd. Rahim (Deputy Dean for Research & Innovation, Faculty of Built Environment)
  • Dr. Suhaimi (Department of Geomatics, Faculty of Built Environment)
  • Dr. Suhana Koting (Deputy Dean for Student Affairs, Faculty of Engineering)
  • Mrs. Nina Norizan (Partnership Manager, IRC)

This collaboration is part of FTUI’s broader strategy to expand its network of international partnerships and to reinforce UI’s position as a leading engineering education institution in Southeast Asia.
