FTUI and QUT Hold Joint Workshop on Place, Context, and Culture

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), in collaboration with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), held a three-day Joint Workshop (22–24 September) themed PLACE/CONTEXT/CULTURE. The workshop explored how participants’ design thinking processes could address fundamental issues of place, context, and culture, while also acknowledging key global challenges such as sustainability, rapid urban growth, and climate change.

On the first day, participants were divided into two groups and conducted surveys at two different locations — Kukusan Teknik and Kelapa Dua, Depok. At these sites, they were assigned to design a simple space that responds to the specific needs of its context.

The second day featured a guest lecture session with two lecturers from QUT. Held at the Multimedia Room of the Department of Architecture, the lecture carried the theme “Reimagining the Past Through Adaptive Reuse.” The session was delivered by Dr. Sarah Briant, Senior Lecturer at QUT, and Michael Molloy, Lecturer at QUT.

On the final day, 27 participants — consisting of 14 students from FTUI’s Architectural Design 5 course and 13 QUT students — presented the projects they had developed throughout the workshop. Divided into four groups, the presentations took place at the 3rd Floor Studio of the Department of Architecture.

“The theme Place, Context, and Culture reflects how architectural education must be able to respond to global challenges such as sustainability and climate change, without neglecting an understanding of local context. Through this collaboration, students learn to think critically and creatively in addressing real-world issues in their surroundings,” said Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of FTUI.
