The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an elevator and the renovation of the interior of the FTUI Lecture Building in Salemba on Friday (May 9), at the ground floor of the FTUI Postgraduate Building, Salemba Campus. The ceremony was marked by pouring cement into a prepared mold. The groundbreaking was led by the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures, and General Administration, Dr.-Ing. Ir. Dalhar Susanto, as well as the Director of LEMTEK UI and Coordinator of the Salemba Class, Prof. Dr. Ir. Asep Handaya Saputra, M.Eng.
Behind every construction project lies collaboration, dedication, and a strong vision. This renovation marks an important step that enhances comfort and safety and reflects FTUI’s commitment to providing the best facilities for its academic community.
Prof. Kemas stated that the FTUI Salemba Lecture Building is more than just a structure—it is a witness to history. It is the first building owned by FTUI and the birthplace of many great engineers before FTUI moved to the UI Depok Campus. From this building, the spirit and commitment to building Indonesia through engineering have been initiated and passed down from generation to generation.
“Today, we are witnessing the construction of a facility and reaffirming FTUI’s commitment to continuous growth and transformation. The elevator construction is the first step in the comprehensive renovation and facelift of the FTUI Salemba Lecture Building. We hope that within the next few months, all improvements will be completed so that this building will truly become a comfortable, safe, and representative space for learning and academic activities,” said Prof. Kemas.
In addition to the elevator construction, the renovation will cover several interior spaces of the FTUI Salemba Lecture Building, including the lobby, administration room, atrium, coworking space, lounge, meeting room, and prayer room.
As an engineering faculty member, FTUI is challenged to design the future and preserve its historical legacy, ensuring that innovation and respect for heritage go hand in hand. This moment marks FTUI’s ongoing transformation toward a more modern, human-centered, and sustainable campus.
The groundbreaking ceremony was also attended by the Heads and Secretaries of Departments, Unit Heads and Managers within FTUI, General Manager of LEMTEK UI (Dr. Ir. Wisnu Isvara, MT), Director of PT Mustika Jati Abadi (Muchamad Syarifuddin), as well as the management teams from both LEMTEK UI and PT Mustika Jati Abadi.
