The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), welcomed representatives from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, on Monday (November 10) to strengthen academic collaboration and explore new opportunities in research and student mobility. The meeting was led by FTUI’s Manager of Partnerships and International Education, Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., and attended by KTH representatives Prof. Bjorn Berggren and Ms. Margareta Svedlund, along with the FTUI International Office team and Heads of the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
During the meeting, KTH representatives conveyed that Indonesia has been included in Sweden’s official list of partner countries. This development opens wider opportunities for FTUI students and faculty members to participate in various academic and research programs facilitated by KTH.
One of the latest initiatives introduced was the “WOMEN in STEM” program, which aims to encourage greater participation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Currently, around 90 to 100 Indonesian students are studying at KTH, the majority at the master’s level, with several others participating in exchange programs.
Key areas of collaboration between FTUI and KTH include water management and sustainability. Additionally, both institutions discussed opportunities for joint supervision of doctoral students, joint research through visiting scholar programs, and the development of reciprocal student exchange (exchange mobility) between the two institutions.
FTUI also offered KTH students opportunities to participate in various academic programs in Indonesia, including internships, visiting student programs, and short courses. Master’s students from KTH may even undertake mobility programs at FTUI and enroll in courses or research projects during the fourth year of their undergraduate program.
Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. emphasized that this collaboration represents a strategic step in expanding FTUI’s international presence. “The meeting with KTH marks an important momentum in broadening FTUI’s international collaboration landscape. We see significant potential in this partnership, particularly in sustainability-based research and student exchange. Through this strategic cooperation, we aim to build a collaborative environment where students and researchers from both institutions can learn, innovate, and contribute together to global challenges,” stated Prof. Kemas.
Through this discussion, both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening international partnerships and supporting cross-cultural and interdisciplinary knowledge exchange. This collaboration is expected to generate meaningful synergy in engineering education and sustainable research at the global level.
