The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) strengthened its international academic network by hosting a joint Guest Lecture with National Taiwan University (NTU), featuring civil engineering expert Dr. Tung-Yu Wu, Ph.D., SE, Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, NTU. The event took place on August 26, 2025, at the Smart Meeting Room, FTUI Dean’s Building, and was attended by students from the Civil Engineering Department, classes of 2021, 2022, and 2024.
In his presentation, Dr. Wu discussed recent innovations in structural engineering, particularly the use of seismic metamaterials for earthquake protection. This technology works by blocking seismic waves from reaching certain buildings or areas, effectively reducing earthquake impacts without directly reinforcing structural components. The innovation holds great potential as a regional-scale seismic mitigation solution, especially for protecting critical infrastructure and high-tech industrial facilities.
Dr. Wu also explained the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Earthquake Engineering through the concept of a Disaster Prevention and Relief Digital Twin. This technology enables real-world disaster impact simulations within a digital platform, facilitating faster analysis of damage, impact assessment, and future risk projections. The integration of AI into Digital Twin systems supports several strategic functions, including rescue route planning, search and rescue operations, building damage classification, sensing data analysis, 3D GIS & rapid loss estimation, and large-scale rapid damage identification, all of which enhance the effectiveness of disaster prevention and mitigation efforts.
The event continued with an information session on National Taiwan University (NTU), presented by Melissa Kuo and Inés Hung from NTU’s Office of International Affairs. Melissa highlighted Taiwan’s strengths as an international study destination—offering a safe environment, affordable tuition and living costs, and outstanding global academic achievements, including NTU’s ranking at #63 worldwide (QS WUR 2026), #1 in Taiwan, and #26 in Asia. Meanwhile, Inés Hung outlined NTU’s international admission process, language proficiency requirements, and scholarship opportunities through the NTU Centennial Fellowship Program, reinforcing NTU’s position as a top study destination for students from around the world.
The session concluded with a Student Sharing Session by So Yuan, an alumnus of FMIPA UI who participated in the IISMA program at NTU in 2023. In her talk, So Yuan shared her experiences choosing NTU as a study destination, emphasizing the high quality of education, safe and supportive learning environment, opportunities to engage in student clubs, and the valuable experience of learning and practicing Mandarin.
FTUI Dean Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation for the successful organization of this event. “The academic collaboration with NTU is part of FTUI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its international network while providing students the opportunity to learn directly from global experts. We hope this initiative will pave the way for sustainable research and educational collaborations,” he stated.
