Freight transportation has an important role in connecting supply and demand so freight transportation has a considerable impact on the regional economy. In an archipelagic country like Indonesia, freight transport involves more than one mode of multimodal transportation. Currently, the development of the transportation infrastructure network has not been integrated and has not been reviewed from a multimodal perspective.
Meanwhile, the large number of stakeholders or actors involved in the freight transport sector also adds to the complexity of planning a multimodal network. From the government side, each transportation sub-sector based on mode has its planning and is less integrated, especially in multimodal transportation.
This was raised by Fitri Indriastiwi in her dissertation which was presented at an open Doctoral promotion session for the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia which was held on 17 March 2023. Fitri proposed an integrated strategic planning model of a multimodal freight transport network.
“This model has a goal to get optimal benefits represented by the value of efficiency in the freight transport system. This model aims to minimize the difference in the total distribution costs of the entire system before and after infrastructure development with the total investment, operational and maintenance costs of transportation infrastructure,” said Fitri.
The budget limit is needed because it is related to the government’s role in preparing the budget for the transportation sector. The research results of Doctor Fitri who is also active in the Ministry of Transportation show that this model can select the best scenario for infrastructure development from the perspective of multimodal and not unimodal transportation. The proposed model can be used to integrate transportation sub-sector planning and at the same time develop a more optimal multimodal transportation system.
“The theme raised is a transportation network integration planning model. which has been long debated by policymakers, especially in the transportation sector in our country. Hopefully, the research on the development of this multimodal transportation planning model can later be applied so that it can make the process of transporting goods in Indonesia more efficient,” said Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., Dean of the UI Faculty of Engineering.
This research dissertation on the Integration Model of Strategic Planning for Multimodal Freight Networks with Limited Infrastructure Cost Allocations has succeeded in bringing Fitri Indrastiwi to a Doctoral degree. Fitri is listed as the 66th doctoral graduate of the Department of Civil Engineering and the 498th graduate of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia.
The Promotion Session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.T., IPU. with Promoter Prof. Dr. Ir. Sigit Pranowo Hadiwardoyo, DEA. and co-promoter Dr. Ir. Nahry, M.T. While the examiner team consisted of Ayomi Dita Rarasati, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Prof. Mohammed Ali Berawi, M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D., Dr. Ir.
