As part of its effort to expand its international partnership network, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) welcomed a delegation from KU Leuven on May 19. KU Leuven is a prestigious research university from Belgium, established in 1425, currently ranked #1 in Belgium, #12 in Europe, and #43 in the world according to the Times Higher Education 2025 rankings. The meeting aimed to follow up on plans for a dual degree collaboration between FTUI and KU Leuven, involving three study programs at FTUI: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.
The meeting, held in the Professors Meeting Room at the FTUI Dean’s Building, was led by FTUI’s Manager of Partnerships and International Education, Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., accompanied by the Secretary of the Department, Dr.-Ing. Mohammad Adhitya, S.T., M.Sc.; Head of Department, Prof. Dr.Eng. Arief Udhiarto, S.T., M.T., IPU; and Head of Department, Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, S.T., M.T. KU Leuven was represented by Associate Professor of the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Prof. Tegoeh Tjahjowidodo.
Through the 2+2 dual degree scheme, FTUI undergraduate students will complete the first two years of their studies at UI and continue the final two years at KU Leuven. Upon completing the undergraduate program, students will also have the option to pursue a two-year Master of Engineering Technology program at KU Leuven. The programs are offered in English and include Chemical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, and Electronics and ICT Engineering Technology—with a strong emphasis on industrial technology and hands-on engineering experience each academic year.
Dr. Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Manager of Partnerships and International Education at FTUI, stated, “We see great potential, especially in engineering. With KU Leuven’s reputation as the top university in Belgium, I am confident that this collaboration between UI and KU Leuven will bring significant benefits to both institutions, in terms of academic and research development.”
To support the implementation of this program, FTUI and KU Leuven will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Agreement of Implementation (AoI) and align the cross-institutional curriculum. The curriculum mapping process is currently underway, with some courses needing adjustment—such as Enterprise & Ethics and Programming for Mechanical and Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and Biotechnology for Electrical Engineering.
Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., added, “The dual degree partnership between FTUI and KU Leuven is a strategic step that will bring numerous benefits to both institutions. Through this learning experience at KU Leuven, students will not only enhance their academic competencies but also develop the global competencies required in the future industrial era.”
