FTUI Hosts Day 1 of Pre-Bootcamp Academic Writing

Following the public lecture on creating sustainable and climate-resilient cities the previous day, FTUI held the first day of the Pre-Bootcamp Academic Writing on Wednesday (26/06). With the same speakers, Prof. Veronica Soebarto and Dr. Scott Hawken, this first training session covered the topics of academic writing and abstract introduction.

Academic writing is a style of writing used in academia or scientific publications to convey information. As students, it is crucial to know how to produce proper academic writing. This skill is essential for students when composing final assignments, theses, dissertations, and other academic papers.

“There are several aspects to consider when creating academic writing, including using formal language, being unbiased, having a good structure, using credible sources, being clear, consistent, and concise,” explained Prof. Veronica.

She continued, “Academic writing also has elements such as research problems or questions, evidence-based content, analysis, methodology, structure, arguments, and implications.”

After covering the basics of academic writing, Dr. Hawken explained abstracts to the training participants. “An abstract includes statements related to context, purpose or objectives, methods, expected results or key findings, and expected conclusions,” stated Dr. Hawken.

In addition to delivering presentations to the participants, the speakers also reviewed abstracts prepared by the participants the previous day. Participants then exchanged abstracts to practice identifying keywords from their peers’ abstracts.

“Good academic writing is crucial for students because it enables them to communicate their ideas and findings effectively. This skill not only supports their academic success but also enhances their professional competence in the future. Students skilled in academic writing will be better prepared to face challenges in the workforce and can significantly contribute to their chosen fields,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU., the Dean of FTUI.
