The International Conference on Innovations for Smart Cities, Urban Mobility, and Sustainable Infrastructure (ICUS) 2025 was held virtually at FTUI over two days (June 19-20, 2025). This international conference represents the first collaborative initiative of the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Development (CSID), the Research Center for Advanced Vehicles (RCAVe), and SMART CITY UI, affiliated with the Institute for Urban Planning and Smart Cities (IUS) at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI).
This year, ICUS 2025 was organized in collaboration with the 4th CSID AUN-SCUD International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure and Urban Development, the 5th International Conference on Smart City Innovation, and Sustainable Mobility and Future Transportation. Under the theme “Advancing Smart Cities, Sustainable Mobility, and Resilient Infrastructure for a Better Future,” this collaboration established an integrated platform promoting knowledge exchange and cross-disciplinary cooperation.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the entire ICUS 2025 organizing committee for their inspiring leadership and meticulous preparation,” said Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia. He emphasized the vital role that higher education institutions, especially FTUI, play in fostering relevant innovations that have a tangible impact on society, particularly in addressing urban development challenges in Indonesia.
Dr. Mustika Sari, S.Ars., M.T., IPM, the conference chair for ICUS, shared similar hopes regarding the impact of the event: “We hope ICUS will serve as a platform for academics, researchers, and practitioners to exchange knowledge and ideas on key themes related to the development of smart cities, sustainable mobility, and resilient infrastructure.”
The first day of ICUS 2025 commenced with an opening remark by Prof. Dr. Ir. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, DEA, Head of the Interdisciplinary Engineering Research Unit (UPIK). This was followed by a speech from Ahmad Gamal, S.Ars., M.U.P., Ph.D., Chair of IUS, who discussed “Integrating Technology and Planning: IUS Smart City Initiatives.” On the second day, the conference opened with a speech by Prof. Ir. Mohammed Ali Berawi, M.Eng.Sc, Ph.D., Head of CSID, titled “Transforming the Built Environment through Value-Added Infrastructure and Technological Innovation.”
The conference featured a lineup of keynote speakers from various institutions and countries, including Dr. Chi Hung Chi from Nanyang Technological University, Dr. Jagannath Aryal from the University of Melbourne, Dr. Dmitry Plotnikov from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Mr. Davide Casini from Italdesign, Dr. Siti Zulkarnain from Universiti Teknologi Mara, and Pierre Fallavier Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology & United Nations. These speakers delivered inspiring presentations, generating engaging discussions and new ideas among participants.
Additionally, 67 presenters from different countries shared their research findings and valuable insights throughout the conference. Their diverse contributions significantly enriched the discourse, underscoring ICUS 2025’s commitment to addressing the complex challenges of urban development and sustainability. The organizers hope that this platform will inspire ongoing academic engagement and research collaboration in the future.
Amid the rapid growth of cities in Indonesia and the increasing demand for inclusive and environmentally conscious infrastructure, ICUS 2025 served as a strategic venue for formulating innovative solutions that can be implemented within a local context. By bringing together academics, government representatives, and industry sectors, the conference aims to strengthen cross-sectoral synergy to create smarter, more sustainable Indonesian cities that are prepared to face future challenges.
