The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), through the Department of Mechanical Engineering, continues to strengthen its role in global research by hosting the Norway–ASEAN in Risk Management for Safer and Sustainable Ocean (NESS) Consortium Seminar 2025. The two-day seminar was held on 11–12 December 2025 at the Auditorium of the IDE Building, 2nd Floor, FTUI.
The seminar specifically adopted the theme “Advancing Eco-Friendly Marine Technologies through Risk Management: Norway–ASEAN Collaboration,” highlighting the integration of risk management into the development of environmentally friendly marine technologies. Its primary objective was to foster innovative, safe, and context-specific co-created solutions to support sustainable maritime development, particularly in addressing environmental and safety challenges across global waters.
Participants of NESS 2025 comprised experts, researchers, practitioners, and students representing the Norway–ASEAN consortium. The consortium involves leading institutions from Norway—such as the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the University of Stavanger, and the University of South-Eastern Norway—along with key academic partners from Southeast Asia, including Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Andalas, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, the National University of Singapore, De La Salle University Manila, as well as universities from Vietnam and Cambodia.
In addition to keynote speeches, the seminar featured parallel sessions in which NESS consortium members presented their research findings, as well as an ASEAN–Norway Synergy Discussion. NESS serves as a platform that brings together diverse perspectives to explore innovative solutions, emphasizing the need to integrate technological advancements with risk management practices while recognizing the complementary strengths of Norway and ASEAN partners in addressing marine-related issues.
Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., stated, “This platform enables the creation of innovative and context-specific solutions by bringing together Norway’s global leadership in maritime risk management with the diverse strengths of partners across Southeast Asia. We believe that collaboration across borders and disciplines is key to advancing safe and responsible marine engineering practices,” said Prof. Kemas.
Professor Yiliu Liu, Editor-in-Chief, also emphasized the importance of academic outputs from the forum. “The NESS Forum not only strengthens international research networks but also encourages the exchange of insights. We hope that the manuscripts and ideas generated from this seminar will advance safe and sustainable marine engineering practices globally, particularly in the context of risk and environmentally friendly technologies,” he noted.
Ardiyansyah Yatim, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., from the relevant study program at FTUI, highlighted the national relevance of the seminar theme. “As a maritime nation, the theme ‘Advancing Eco-Friendly Marine Technologies through Risk Management’ is highly vital for Indonesia. Discussions focused on how risk management can ensure that the adoption of innovative marine technologies—such as alternative fuels and environmentally friendly ship designs—can be carried out safely, reliably, and sustainably. FTUI is ready to mobilize relevant research to support this goal,” he explained.
Through the NESS 2025 seminar, FTUI reaffirms its commitment to contributing to the development of environmentally friendly marine technologies while strengthening international research networks. The consortium is expected to generate new ideas, expand global collaborations, and enhance tangible contributions in leading sustainability-based innovations for a better maritime future.
