FTUI Explores Doctoral Collaboration and Student Mobility with the University of Glasgow

On Monday (October 20), the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) welcomed an official visit from the University of Glasgow. FTUI was represented by Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Associate Dean for Partnership and International Education, while the University of Glasgow delegation consisted of Dr. Henrik Hesse, Dr. Paul Eizenhoefer, and Ms. Sophia.

The visit focused on exploring strategic opportunities, particularly in the fields of doctoral education, student mobility, and joint research. The University of Glasgow presented its Doctoral Training and Partnership PhD programs, which offer high flexibility for international students. Through this scheme, students are not required to reside in Glasgow and may conduct their research in their home country under a joint supervision system between supervisors from both UoG and FTUI.

“Initiatives such as the Partnership PhD represent a strategic step to strengthen academic ties between Indonesia and the United Kingdom,” said Andyka Kusuma.

Interestingly, for the Partnership PhD program at the College of Engineering, University of Glasgow, international students are not charged international tuition fees but instead pay local student rates. However, the program requires institutional or industry support, either from Glasgow or Indonesia. A collaboration under this model is currently being explored between FTUI’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

In addition to the doctoral programs, both parties also discussed potential collaborations in other areas, including:

  • Dual degree programs for the Master of Environmental Engineering;
  • Student mobility for short courses, which will become more accessible once the UK rejoins the Erasmus Consortium (expected in 2026–2027);
  • Joint supervision for doctoral programs.

In the field of research, the University of Glasgow expressed its interest in developing joint research initiatives with FTUI in several key areas, particularly environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and aerospace engineering.

“We are very enthusiastic about exploring collaboration opportunities with the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia. The University of Glasgow is committed to expanding its global research network and providing more flexible opportunities for international students, particularly through the Partnership PhD and joint supervision schemes. We see great potential for both institutions to strengthen each other in the fields of engineering, environment, and aerospace,” said Ms. Sophia.

As a follow-up, both institutions will focus on developing student mobility and joint supervision programs through the Partnership PhD scheme, which are expected to further strengthen academic and research networks between FTUI and the University of Glasgow.
