FTUI Establishes Strategic Partnership with Tsinghua University, Asia’s Top University, for Sustainability Research

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), conducted an academic visit to Tsinghua University on November 4, 2025, to strengthen collaboration in environmental engineering, sustainability research, and interdisciplinary education. The meeting, held at the School of Environment, Tsinghua University, was one of the key agendas in FTUI’s series of visits to leading universities in China.

The FTUI delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, accompanied by Prof. Supriatna, M.T., Director of the Graduate School of Sustainable Development, Dr. Andyka Kusuma, Manager for Partnership and International Education, and Dr. Humprey Arnaldo Russel, Head of the ASEAN-China Research Center at the Graduate School of Sustainable Development. From Tsinghua University, the meeting was attended by Prof. Liu Shuming, Dean of the School of Environment; Prof. Zhang Xiaoyuan, Assistant Dean; and Jiang Aina and Liu Qin, Coordinators for International Affairs, School of Environment.

The discussion began with a presentation from Tsinghua University about the School of Environment, which originated from the Municipal Engineering program established in 1932 and later evolved into the first doctoral program in Environmental Engineering in China. With 95 faculty members and a strong global reputation, the school now leads in teaching and research in environmental science, engineering, and sustainability management. Tsinghua University itself is recognized as the best university in China and Asia, ranking 2nd globally according to Times Higher Education 2026, 17th worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2026, and 18th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025.

FTUI then presented its academic collaboration potential, including student exchange programs, joint master’s degrees, and short-term summer school programs in environmental engineering. Its English-taught international programs and strong research infrastructure make FTUI a promising partner for Tsinghua in developing global academic cooperation.

Both universities also discussed the possibility of creating a 2+1 academic model, dual-degree doctoral programs, and joint research projects supervised by faculty from both institutions. During the discussion, Tsinghua University expressed its readiness to provide scholarships for UI students participating in the Summer School program, including accommodation and travel support, as part of its commitment to strengthening academic relations between the two institutions.

“Collaboration with Tsinghua University is a strategic step in expanding FTUI’s research and education network in environmental engineering. Together with this world-class university, we aim to create impactful research and innovation for global sustainability and encourage Indonesian students to take part on the international stage,” said Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, Dean of FTUI.

Meanwhile, Prof. Liu Shuming, Dean of the School of Environment at Tsinghua University, expressed appreciation for the FTUI delegation’s visit.

“We see FTUI as a partner that shares our vision in advancing education and research for sustainability. Through this collaboration, we hope to strengthen academic exchanges and develop cross-disciplinary solutions to global environmental challenges,” said Prof. Liu.

The meeting marked an important step in strengthening the relationship between Universitas Indonesia and Tsinghua University. Both institutions are committed to continuing collaboration in sustainability, innovation, and multidisciplinary research, as part of their shared mission to enhance the role of academia in building a greener, more globally competitive future.
