FTUI KKI Students Participate in Physics Lab at iCELL for the First Time

In the second semester of the academic year 2023/2024, students from the International Special Class (KKI) at FTUI conducted Physics Mechanics and Physics Electricity laboratories at the iCell Building, 7th floor. This lab session is the first time it has been held at FTUI after previously being entirely organized at the FMIPA UI. The relocation aims to conduct all courses taken by KKI FTUI students with English as the medium of instruction, as part of the step to modernize conventional lab methods.

The lab employs an inquiry-based learning method with a hybrid of virtual and physical modules. Through this approach, students’ curiosity about physical phenomena can be honed, allowing them to systematically and structurally conclude the presentation of facts from higher-level order questions. This undoubtedly supports the achievement of internationally recognized learning objectives, where students are capable of using their critical thinking skills to solve and analyze events and problems, providing them with a strong foundation for their future endeavours.

To accomplish this, both students and teachers rely solely on tablets and laptops. Surprisingly, no paper is used, and conventional equipment is almost unnecessary. Aside from capturing attention, this approach aligns with sustainability principles.

“The students are very enthusiastic and can’t wait for the next lab session. We also appreciate the hard work of the lab assistants and being pioneers in the first physics lab in the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia,” said Dr. Jaka Fajar Fatriansyah, an FTUI lecturer. The initial lab session was supported by 12 early assistants and two staff members, Agrin Febrian Pradana M.Si and Andreas Federico S.T.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., stated, “We are delighted that the facilities we have built can be utilized by students. Furthermore, the students’ enthusiasm for conducting labs at iCell aligns with sustainability principles. Hopefully, this can serve as an example for other courses and students. I hope that as members of the Engineering community, we can maximize the use of these facilities while maintaining the facilities available at FTUI.”
