FTUI Explores Collaboration with Universiti Malaya

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) received a visit from Universiti Malaya, represented by Associate Prof. Dr. Asrul Mahjuddin Ressang. The visit took place on Wednesday (August 6) in the Senate Meeting Room, FTUI Dean’s Building, and was welcomed by Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. This meeting was held to explore potential collaboration between FTUI and Universiti Malaya.

The first discussion focused on the potential Double/Joint Degree program for undergraduate students at Universiti Malaya. According to Dr. Asrul, this scheme would be quite challenging as it involves professional programs—particularly in engineering fields such as Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and others. He also explained that Malaysia’s Ministry of Education enforces very strict and complex graduation criteria for undergraduate students, requiring them to take specific courses.

Dr. Asrul further explained that implementing a 2+2 collaboration model (two years at Universitas Indonesia and two years at Universiti Malaya) would be difficult. At present, Universiti Malaya does not yet have any Double/Joint Degree programs at the undergraduate level with universities outside Malaysia. Therefore, he proposed initiating Double/Joint Degree cooperation at the postgraduate level instead.

In the subsequent discussion, Dr. Asrul was appointed by the faculty as FTUI’s representative in Malaysia to help recruit Malaysian students for international mobility programs at FTUI. He will also work on developing educational internationalization initiatives to increase the number of inbound students to FTUI. Another potential area of collaboration discussed was joint PhD supervision, where UI supervisors would also be listed as co-authors on published articles—along with the name of their university—thereby strengthening academic cooperation between both institutions.

During the visit, Prof. Kemas was accompanied by Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures, and General Administration, Dr.-Ing. Ir. Dalhar Susanto; Education Manager, Dr. Nyoman Suwartha, S.T., M.T., M.Agr.; Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Prof. Dr.Eng. Arief Udhiarto, S.T., M.T., IPU; Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, S.T., M.T.; and Secretary of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Dr.Eng. Mochamad Adhiraga Pratama, S.T., M.T.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas, concluded the meeting by stating “Now, the question is how we can realize this collaboration between FTUI and Universiti Malaya. Moreover, Dr. Asrul has shown great commitment toward Indonesia by encouraging Indonesian universities to establish partnerships with Universiti Malaya. Let us make the most of this opportunity.”
