FTUI once again held the Pre-Bootcamp Academic Writing on Thursday (27/06), inviting Prof. Veronica Soebarto and Dr. Scott Hawken as speakers. On the second day of training, the topics covered were literature review, methodology, and types of research.
In academic writing, a literature review is a crucial element that must be included. This review should be relevant to the research questions as it forms the foundation of the researcher’s knowledge.
“Literature is essential in the research process because it can identify research gaps, acknowledge existing research strengths and how contributions can be made, as well as frame existing research positively and critically,” explained Dr. Hawken.
He continued, “There are various types of literature reviews, including systematic, narrative, theoretical, methodological, meta-analysis, theoretical review, and scoping research.”
The next session was presented by Prof. Veronica. She stated, “Methodology refers to the system of methods and principles in research. Methodology is necessary because we need a framework and guidelines to clearly define research questions, develop and test hypotheses, and achieve objectives.”
“Research comes in various types, such as generative, conceptual, theoretical, experimental, diagnostic, applied, investigative, historical, and descriptive. Meanwhile, research can also be classified based on its nature, namely qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods,” continued Prof. Veronica.
FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., stated, “This activity is a strategic step in equipping students with essential knowledge and skills in academic writing. By understanding the literature review, methodology, and types of research, students will be able to conduct more solid research and contribute to the advancement of knowledge. This forms a strong foundation for producing high-quality academic work that benefits society and the nation.”
