FTUI Presents Jef Caers from Stanford University in a Public Lecture on Mining Sustainability

Last Wednesday (21/2), FTUI hosted a public lecture with guest lecturer Jef Caers at the Department of Industrial Engineering. He is a Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Stanford University and the founder of Mineral-X. The topic he presented was related to sustainability in mining.

“The burning of coal to produce electricity and generate heat is highly unsustainable. An alternative to this is shallow geothermal energy, which involves the use of subsurface with constant temperature and a device called a heat pump to move heat up and down,” said Jef.

Sustainable technology already exists, but optimizing its implementation is still underway. This is crucial to obtaining energy effectively and safely. Therefore, the key aspects involve exploring large concentrations, ensuring technical sustainability and safety, and executing with speed and space.

During his lecture, Jef explained, “The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in this matter can facilitate our work. AI can be applied to decarbonize energy systems, geothermal energy, sustainability in mining and mineral processing, as well as crucial mineral supply chains. Intelligent agents are used for long-term data in acquisition planning, while intelligent prospectors act as information providers regarding the next steps to be taken.”

“We are delighted that Prof. Jef could share his knowledge at FTUI. His lecture was highly informative and beneficial for us as engineering enthusiasts. I express my gratitude to Prof. Jef for his willingness to give a lecture at FTUI. Hopefully, in the future, we can continue to collaborate,” said the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU.
