On Friday, (03/06), the Urban and Regional Planning Study Program (PWK) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (PWK FTUI) held a Webinar in the series of Open House events of PWK FTUI. Mr. Agung Mahesa Himawan Dorodjatoen, Urban Coordinator, Directorate of Regional Development, Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas was invited as a resource person at the Webinar entitled “National Urban Policy: Towards Sustainable Urban 2045.”
In his presentation, Agung explained that urban development must be inclusive and embrace all parties in urban areas, both those from families below the poverty line and upper-middle-class families. Cities must be built and linked to other areas around them through urban agglomeration. Such city builders aim to prevent the growth of social ills and environmental problems arising from urban problems.
“We are in a large current of massive population increase. This is partly due to economic motives. Cities are magnets that bring in people from other areas. However, this population movement hurts cities. The speed of population growth in urban areas due to urbanization is not balanced with the increasing needs of the city, such as the need for housing. The growth of the urban population should be accompanied by an increase in the provision of public services and an increasing economy,” said Agung.
These urban problems can be seen during the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic shows urban dualism, namely regular, clean, developed settlements and vice versa. Cities during a pandemic are areas with high levels of virus spread. This problem appears as a sign that the area of settlements in urban areas does not meet the proper size of the population.
“City development should be by the five missions of KPN 2045. The first mission is to realize a balanced, prosperous, and just national urban system. The second mission is to encourage livable, inclusive, and cultured cities. The third mission is to encourage advanced and prosperous cities. The fourth vision is to encourage green and resilient cities. Finally, to realize transparent, accountable, intelligent, and integrated urban governance,” said Agung closing his presentation session.
