The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), is set to host a prestigious student-level offensive cybersecurity competition, Country-to-Country (C2C) Capture the Flag (CTF), in 2026. This was announced by the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU., during his visit to Keio University, Japan, on Friday (26/01). The Computer Engineering Study Program at the Department of Electrical Engineering (DTE) FTUI has been appointed as the organizer of this global-level competition.
During the visit, Prof. Heri expressed, “The decision to host the Country-to-Country Capture the Flag (C2C CTF) competition in 2026 is part of our commitment to continuously support student development in the field of cybersecurity. Through this competition, we aim to provide a platform for students to hone their skills, foster international cooperation, and respond to challenges in this digital era.”
On this visit, Prof. Heri Hermansyah was accompanied by the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering (DTE) FTUI, Dr.Eng. Ir. Arief Udhiarto, S.T., M.T., the Head of the Computer Engineering Study Program, Dr. Ir. Muhammad Salman, and permanent teaching staff in the Computer Engineering Study Program, Dr. Ruki Harwahyu, S.T., M.T., M.Sc.
This decision aligns with UI’s initiative to join the InterNational Cyber Security Center of Excellence (INCS-CoE), initiated by Keio University in 2016. INCS-CoE aims to create partnerships between countries involving the government, industry, and academia. Since 2020, UI has established the Cyber Awareness and Resilience Center (IdCARE), a national and regional (ASEAN and surrounding areas) centre of excellence and initiative.
INCS-CoE members include world-renowned universities in the field of cybersecurity such as Stanford University, Northeastern University, Imperial College London, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Melbourne University, Edith Cowan University, the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Tokyo Denki University, and the Institute of Information Security (IISEC). UI is currently the sole representative from Indonesia.
The 5th edition of the C2C CTF competition in 2024 will be hosted by Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Australia, after the successful 2023 event held at Keio University, Japan. From 2020 to 2022, the competition was conducted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally, the abbreviation C2C stood for Cambridge-to-Cambridge, which was later changed to Country-to-Country when several countries joined as a steering committee.
In the C2C CTF, each participant collaborates with participants from other countries as a team and competes with other teams to complete various challenges using their hacking skills. The competition is expected to stimulate the enhancement of technical skills in the field of cybersecurity for Indonesian students, broaden students’ perspectives through international collaboration and networks, and strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global cybersecurity community.
