This year, for the first time a student from the Computer Engineering Study Program, Department of Electrical Engineering FTUI will represent Indonesia in the Open Lab Summer Research Program in Centre Europeen pour la Recherchee Nucleaire (CERN). The very lucky student is I Made Sanadhi Sutandi (Electrical Engineering Class of 2012). He is also a teaching assistant at the Computer Network Laboratory, Electrical Engineering Department FTUI. He will participate in the Summer Research Program for 8 weeks (20 June – 21 August 2016) alongside other 40 participants who has won the spot after competing with 1.461 other applicants from all over the world.
CERN is a research organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Established in 1954, the organization is based in a northwest suburb of Geneva on the Franco–Swiss border, and has 21 member states. CERN’s main function is to provide the particle accelerators (Large Hadron Collider) and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research – as a result, numerous experiments have been constructed at CERN as a result of international collaborations. CERN has also contributed in the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle which was awarded with a Noble in Physics in 2013 and also the discovery of Quark – Gluon Plasma. CERN is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web. The main site at Meyrin has a large computer facility containing powerful data processing facilities, primarily for experimental-data analysis; because of the need to make these facilities available to researchers elsewhere, it has historically been a major wide area networking hub.
For the duration of the program, Sanadhi will participate in a number of classes and be involved in several research projects with CERN researchers, such as: a deeper understanding of Data Acquisition, Computing Platforms, Data Storage Architectures, Compute Provisioning and Management, Networks and Communication and Data Analytic.
The participation of the first UI student in the Research Program in CERN is a stepping stone that marks the further involvement of young Indonesian students in one of the world’s largest scientific collaboration, CERN. We sincerely hope that this will open the door to bigger benefit and the opportunity for other students to become involved also. (Electrical Engineering Department FTUI)
