FTUI Student Wins Gold Medal at ONMIPA-PT 2024

Muhammad Adyan Dafi, a student from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (DTK FTUI), class of 2023, has won the gold medal in chemistry at the 2024 National Olympiad of Mathematics and Natural Sciences for Higher Education (ONMIPA-PT). The competition was held at Hasanuddin University, Makassar, from May 12 to 17, 2024. The Universitas Indonesia (UI) team also brought home 3 gold medals, 6 silver medals, 4 bronze medals, and 4 honourable mentions.

ONMIPA-PT is a student-level competition testing four fields within Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA): chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics. This annual Olympiad is organized by the Indonesian Talent Development Center (BPTI), National Achievement Center (Puspresnas), and Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek). This year’s ONMIPA-PT theme was “Achieving through Building Collaboration.”

The ONMIPA-PT competition process consists of three stages: university level, regional/district level, and national level. At UI, 79 students participated in the initial selection. After the UI-level selection, the top five students in each field proceeded to the regional selection, grouped into 16 regions of the Higher Education Service Institute (LLDIKTI). UI is included in Region III, Special Capital Region (DKI) of Jakarta.

Muhammad Adyan Dafi explains processrough before finally winning at the national level: “The total number of participants in the chemistry field at the regional level was 818 students. Selected participants were then invited to the national competition, with a maximum of 65 participants for each field. The selection was based on the top participants from each region, one participant from a private university with the highest score in the region meeting the minimum standard, and the top-ranked participants in the overall regional selection to meet the maximum quota,” he said.

Dafi competed in the chemistry Olympiad with materials covering inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, organic and biochemistry, and analytical chemistry. During his high school years, Dafi also won a bronze medal at the international level at the 55th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2023, held in Zurich, Switzerland, from July 16 to 25, 2023.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU., commented on this achievement. “The achievements of Muhammad Adyan Dafi and the other UI team members are the result of dedication and hard work to demonstrate the abilities and competencies of UI students in science and technology. Hopefully, this accomplishment will inspire other students to continue achieving and bringing honour to Universitas Indonesia both nationally and internationally. Congratulations to Dafi and the entire UI team on this achievement.”
