FTUI Students Achieve Two Awards in International Industrial Engineering Competition

Eight students from the Department of Industrial Engineering (DTI) at the Faculty of Engineering (FE) of the University of Indonesia (UI), Class of 2021, proudly earned two accolades at The 14th International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM). The students brought home First Place and Second Place in the IEOM Undergraduate Research Competition awards, which included more than 100 participants from various countries around the world.

These eight DTI FTUI students were divided into two teams under the guidance of Professor Rahmat Nurcahyo, S.T., M.Eng.Sc., a professor at DTI FTUI. The first team consisted of Lulu Afifa, Juni Fransisca Onggani Winata, Meutiara Nisyafietdhia Setiawan, and Sarah Dwi Aliya. Lulu and her team achieved First Place in the Undergraduate Research Competition with their project titled ‘Enhancing Automotive After-Sales Service Shop Layout: Shop & Drive Systematic Layout Planning for Facility Design and Workflow Optimization.’ The team focused on improving services at a car showroom and workshop located in Depok, West Java.

“Our research was conducted at Shop & Drive Margonda to improve the layout of available facilities to enhance efficiency in the process of changing car oil and shock absorbers. As a result, the layout improvements could reduce material flow movement by 47.42% for the car oil changing process and 42.84% for the shock absorber replacement process. The total optimization for both processes was 45.13%. The resulting layout adjustments also increased the efficiency of area allocation in the shop by 47.8% and reduced the required number of operators from 7 to 6 workers,” said Lulu.

The competition took place online from January 8 to February 19, 2024, at Hyatt Regency, Dubai. The second team, consisting of Ahmad Nauval Ariq M., Baidilla Anamta Bimasakti, Felix Ferdinand Laureng, and Setya Ady Wicaksono, secured second place. Ahmad and his team presented their project titled ‘Optimizing the Facility Layout and Material Handling System Using the Systematic Layout Planning Method: A Case Study at PT EDS Manufacturing Indonesia.’ The team chose a manufacturing company specializing in wire harness production for motor vehicles.

Ahmad stated, “We conducted a case study on the layout at PT EDS Manufacturing Indonesia. Of the two alternatives we created, alternative layout 2 resulted in an 18-worker utilization increase, a production rate of 72 units per hour, and an efficiency of 97.7%. SimPy simulation validated the proposed layout’s daily material handling and production costs. As a result, there was a 13.9% reduction in material handling costs and a 3.92% increase in daily production.”

“Congratulations to Prof. Rachmat Nurcahyo and his eight undergraduate students for this outstanding achievement. The accomplishments of these students are truly commendable, and we are immensely proud to see the names of FTUI and UI shining internationally. Their success in creating innovations through their research reflects their dedication and perseverance. I believe these innovations not only bring prestige to FTUI but also drive the advancement of knowledge and technology in the industrial world. May this achievement inspire other students to contribute with outstanding innovations and achievements at FTUI,” said Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU.
