Three students of the Civil Engineering Department class 2018 won in two National Geotechnical competitions held in the range of September – November 2021. The Navigation Team consisted of Muhammad Reza Imansyah, Kevin Yoseph Manuel, and Timothy under the guidance of Dr. Erly Bahsan, S.T., M.Kom and Prof. Ir. Widjojo Adi Prakoso M.Sc., Ph.D.
The Navigation Team won 3rd place in the Geotechnical Engineering Competition CIVEX ITS 2021 (GEC CIVEX ITS 2021) and 2nd place in the Geosinindo Geosynthetic Application Challenge 2021 (GGAC 2021).
At the Geotechincal Engineering Competition CIVEX ITS 2021 (GEC 2021), the Navigation Team won Third Place out of 40 competing teams. GEC 2021 will be held on July 16 – November 28, 2021 by the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology together with PT Teknindo Geosistem and the Association of Indonesian Soil Engineers.
Meanwhile in the Geosinindo Geosynthetic Application Challenge (GGAC 2021), the Navigation Team won Second Place out of 72 participating teams. GGAC 2021 will be held on 10 September – 15 November 2021 by PT Tetrasa Geosinindo.
GEC and GGAC 2021 focus on analyzing the causes of geotechnical problems in several real cases in Indonesia. The competing teams were asked to propose innovative soil improvement methods that are appropriate, in overcoming problems related to slope failure and soil problems. There are several cases that must be resolved in these two competitions.
“In the CIVEX ITS 2021 competition, there are two case studies that must be answered at the preliminary stage and the final stage. The first is the Design of Soil Improvement and Reinforcement against Landslides on the Bujangga Road Section on the Segah River Bank, Tanjung Redeb City, Berau, Kalimantan in 2012. The second case is the Design of Soil Improvement and Reinforcement against Landslides in the Sidoarjo Mud Embankment located in Pologunting Hamlet, Gempolsari Village, Sidoarjo in 2018,” said Muhammad Reza Imansyah.
While in the 2021 GGAC competition, the case study used is the design design for a one km class I road in the Jambi area which has soft soil conditions and is flooded like a swamp. “We have successfully answered these three case studies by using a combination of geosynthetic materials, namely Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) and Prefabricated Horizontal Drain (PHD) to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay soils, as well as Geotextiles and Geogrids for slope stability reinforcement. Soil improvement and reinforcement, apart from being analyzed by theoretical calculations in the form of the limit equilibrium method in direct calculations and Geostudio applications, also uses finite element computer calculations with the Plaxis application. Of course, the design process needs to adjust the construction method and good construction management,” said Kevin Yoseph Manuel.
The Navigation Team managed to bring home the title of champion because it met the indicators in terms of writing papers, the ability to analyze the causes of problems in the given case studies, the flexibility in implementing the proposed innovations, calculations and a clear basis for choosing methods, calculating costs and time, and the ability to convey information and answer questions through the final presentation stage.
