The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), welcomed a delegation from the University of Tokyo at the Professors Council Room, FTUI Dean’s Building (24/11). This meeting provided strategic momentum to strengthen academic collaboration, open up opportunities for multidisciplinary research, and explore the establishment of future joint programs.
The University of Tokyo delegation was represented by Dr. Di Su (Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering), Dr. Hiroyatsu Satoh (Professor, Department of Socio-Cultural Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences), and Ms. Mari Matsuoka (Deputy Director, International Liaison Officer, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences).
Through its Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS), the University of Tokyo is recognized as a leading research center, with over 1,600 master’s and doctoral students, including 50 percent international students. GSFS consists of three major divisions—Transdisciplinary Sciences, Environmental Studies, and Biosciences—which serve as the foundation for multidisciplinary research collaboration between the two institutions.
During the visit, the University of Tokyo presented various academic opportunities such as the University of Tokyo Summer Internship Program (UTSIP), a seven-week summer research internship for undergraduate students, as well as the GRIS Short Program, which offers flexible short-term research experiences for students and faculty members without strict scheduling requirements.
FTUI and the University of Tokyo have previously collaborated through the UI Department of Architecture, including in the “Kigumi in The Kampung” project and exhibition, which highlighted 14 years of research collaboration and community engagement in the Cikini area.
In this meeting, both parties discussed the development of collaborative initiatives including: joint workshops or joint studios in architecture, joint research across interdisciplinary fields of engineering and environmental studies, long-term plans for joint or dual-degree programs at the master’s level, and the establishment of a joint PhD program.
FTUI’s Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., stated that this partnership marks an important step in strengthening FTUI’s international research ecosystem. “Collaboration with the University of Tokyo opens wide opportunities for FTUI students and researchers to engage in world-class research. We aim to ensure that this partnership results in academic and research programs that are relevant, innovative, and impactful for the development of engineering in Indonesia.”
Both institutions agreed to begin short-term cooperation through the implementation of workshops and joint research activities before moving forward to more structured academic initiatives such as joint degree or joint PhD programs. FTUI affirmed its commitment to strengthening global networks and expanding academic mobility opportunities for its academic community.
