The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) held a work meeting of the Three Organs on Thursday-Friday, March 17-18, 2022 in Bogor. The Three Organs Working Meeting was held as a means of gathering and also sharing perceptions between Faculty Management, Faculty Academic Senate and Faculty Professors Council. At the event, the entire board of management/management were present, all Heads and Secretaries of the Department, SAF (Chairman, Secretary, Commission Chairs and UI Senators from FTUI), DGBF (Chairman, Secretary, Commission Chairs and DGBF representatives at DGBU ) in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI).
In his remarks, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU opened with the story of the conversation between Einstein and Charlie Chaplin. “Einstein said, ‘I really admire you. Your artistic language is universal, all people understand what you mean’. Charlie Chaplin replied to Einstein’s words, ‘No, I admire you because even though people don’t understand what you’re talking about, people feel the impact of your discoveries’.”
“So, engineering people in the framework of entrepreneur and engineering thinking cannot stand alone. In the world, we see Charlie Chaplin and Einstein, both genuine in their respective fields. Einstein in the sciences, Charlie Chaplin in the social, cultural and humanities. Chaplin who didn’t speak, but was understood by the public. Meanwhile, Einstein’s speech no one understands, but people feel the impact. Engineering people in their work may not be understood by many people, so we have to get along with everyone, such as economic people, socio-cultural people. Thus, a language that is not understood by everyone can be translated into a universal language which is then understood. If these two things go hand in hand, they will make the Faculty of Engineering superior, it will have an impact on the Universitas Indonesia,” said Dean Heri.
The Three Organs Working Meeting was opened with a presentation from the Rector of Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. entitled “Looking Behind the Horizon”. In his presentation, the UI Rector said that entrepreneurship is a way out for engineering to develop their research into creative ideas, out of the box.
“As a higher education institution, FTUI must look beyond the horizon because the great ones are no longer the strong and the big ones, but the ones who can “peek” first and adapt. This means that FTUI and UI must be able to see signs of existing developments and see which direction the industry is going. In addition, flexibility is needed by the FTUI academic community. They are not only good at researching in the laboratory and producing Q1 publications,” said the Rector.
He also said that in addition to research and publication skills, the faculty members must also have the ability to enter the industry. Smart is no longer enough, but now you must have innovation and connection. Seeing that the competition is getting faster, FTUI and UI must also step up and transform quickly. “In this dynamic life, it is necessary to cultivate humility in oneself. We don’t need to be arrogant or boastful. When we have become the best, everyone will know, without being told,” continued the UI Rector.
In addition to the presentation from the Rector of UI, there were two additional presentations from Dr. Lukman, S.T., M.Hum., Institutional Director, who delivered a presentation entitled Modernization and Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions, and Prof. Ir. Teuku Faisal Fathani., ST., MT., Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN Eng., Plt. Director of Research, Technology and Community Service, who delivered a presentation entitled Transformation of Higher Education in the Field of Research and Community Service. The two speakers are the Director of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Republic of Indonesia.
After listening to the explanation from the UI Chancellor and the two Directors, the participants of the work meeting were then divided into three commissions, each with two speakers, namely:
Commission 1: Modemization and Internationalization of Education
Speakers: 1. Vice Chancellor Bid. Academic and Student Affairs
2.Prof. Dr. Ir. Harinaldi, M.Eng.
Commission 2: Innovation Entrepreneur
