UI Engineering Professor Receives the 2025 Sutami Award

Professor of the University of Indonesia (UI) Prof. Ir. Yulianto Sulistyo Nugroho, M.Sc., Ph.D. has received the 2025 Sutami Award in the category of Academic Expert in Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineering, presented directly by the Minister of Public Works, Ir. Dody Hanggodo, M.PE.

The professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering UI, was recognized for his significant contributions to the development of fire safety science and technology in Indonesia.

The award was presented during an official event organized by the Ministry of Public Works on Monday (1/12), attended by academics and key stakeholders in the industry. The Sutami Award 2025 is part of the Ministry’s 80th Hari Bakti celebration, held under the theme “Equitable Infrastructure, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia.”

The Sutami Award is organized as an appreciation for stakeholders in ministries and non-ministerial government institutions (K/L), local governments, community groups, academics, service providers, and journalists who have demonstrated outstanding performance and made significant contributions to supporting national infrastructure development.

“This award reflects the Government’s strong commitment to advancing the field of mechanical engineering and fire protection, which must be understood by students during their studies and applied by engineers and infrastructure stakeholders in building safety systems. Every effort to prevent fire—through education, research, and the design of appropriate and effective fire protection systems—is an essential act of safeguarding lives and protecting national development assets from fire hazards,” said Yulianto.

Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his highest appreciation for this achievement.

“FTUI is extremely proud of Prof. Yulianto’s accomplishment in receiving the 2025 Sutami Award. This achievement reinforces FTUI’s contribution to advancing strategic research that has a direct impact on public safety and national infrastructure development. We hope this milestone inspires our academic community to continue producing research and innovations that bring broad benefits to society,” said Kemas.

As one of the pioneers in fire safety engineering education and research in Indonesia, Yulianto has spent more than two decades developing academic programs in fire safety engineering and fire science research. His expertise includes fire calorimetry, modeling of fire and smoke spread, fire protection technologies such as water-mist systems, studies of human behavior in emergencies, and performance-based approaches to fire safety design.

Many of his research outputs have been published in reputable international scientific journals and have served as academic and technical references cited by researchers worldwide. Yulianto actively serves as a member of the Building Reliability Committee (KKBG), the Expert Professional Team (TPA) for Building Construction, and various technical committees for the development of Indonesian National Standards (SNI) related to building science, firefighting vehicles, and fire protection equipment.

Amid the rapid growth of high-rise buildings, densely populated residential areas, and urban infrastructure, fire safety issues are increasingly critical. Yulianto’s scientific contributions and ideas play a vital role in promoting the implementation of more comprehensive, evidence-based fire safety standards at the national level.

With this award, the Faculty of Engineering UI further strengthens its position as a leading engineering education institution committed to advancing science and engineering that address national challenges. FTUI will continue to foster research collaboration, enhance academic capacity, and promote the implementation of fire protection technologies to support the development of a safe and sustainable Indonesia.
