The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), in collaboration with the Directorate of Innovation and High Impact Research at Universitas Indonesia (DIRBT-UI), held the Roadshow on Intellectual Property Potential Education on Tuesday, June 4, 2025. The event took place in the FTUI Smart Meeting Room and featured the main speaker, Head of the Sub-directorate of Intellectual Property and Promotion at DIRBT-UI, Apt. Indah Handayani, S.Farm.
This event aimed to enhance the academic community’s understanding of intellectual property (IP) potential and encourage the broader utilisation of research and innovation outcomes through legal protection mechanisms and commercialisation opportunities.
Dr. Muhamad Sahlan, S.Si., M.Eng., Manager of Partnerships, Ventures, and Entrepreneurship at FTUI, emphasized the importance of managing intellectual property as part of research output and institutional contribution.
“As we know, research outcomes are not limited to scientific publications such as international journals but can also take the form of intellectual property, such as patents, copyrights, industrial designs, and trademarks. UI has launched an Intellectual Property Information System (IPIS) to facilitate the documentation and management of IP,” he explained.
Dr. Sahlan further stated that intellectual property is an intangible yet strategically valuable asset.
“IP is an asset owned by Universitas Indonesia that benefits not only the institution but also the inventors or creators. UI has policies that provide tangible incentives—70% of royalties go to the researchers. This serves as a strong incentive for researchers to register their innovative works confidently,” he added.
“In addition, recent updates from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) indicate that there will be various incentive programs and awards for researchers with granted patents or those who have licensed their inventions. This is a great opportunity that both lecturers and students should take advantage of,” he continued.
The main session of the event was delivered by Apt. Indah Handayani, S.Farm., who presented on the fundamentals of Intellectual Property, its types, and strategies for filing and managing IP rights. She explained the key differences between copyrights, patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, as well as the duration of legal protection for each of these types.
“Not all research outcomes can be immediately patented. They must meet criteria of novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability. Therefore, it is important for researchers to understand and plan their intellectual property strategy from the early stages of research,” said Indah.
She also introduced UI’s latest digital system, e-PINS (Electronic Patent and Intellectual Property Submission), a platform for online submission and monitoring of IP processes. This system was developed to support increased innovation productivity and strengthen UI’s global standing in research output-based rankings.
In a separate statement, FTUI Dean Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., highlighted the importance of intellectual property education as part of the university’s innovation ecosystem.
“FTUI continues to promote a culture of innovative, applicable, and impactful research. Education on intellectual property is crucial to ensure that the research outcomes of lecturers and students go beyond publication—protected by law and potentially developed into real-world products. FTUI is committed to being a home for innovations built on collaboration and societal benefit,” said Prof. Kemas.
Through this initiative, FTUI and DIRBT-UI aim to enhance intellectual property literacy and awareness among the academic community.
