The International Short Course in Engineering – UI Creates program organized by the Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Indonesia (UI) was attended by 18 students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The program lasts for one month (July 2-30, 2023) and HKUST students who participate in it will get 2 credits.
“We are very pleased to collaborate with HKUST through this International Short Course in Engineering program. Hopefully, through this program, students from both universities can learn from each other and gain new insights into science and technology in the field of sustainable energy. Students from HKUST will also benefit in terms of cross-cultural learning experiences, both in academic and non-academic fields,” said Dean of FTUI Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, in a speech at the opening of the International Short Course in Engineering Program as well as welcoming the arrival of HKUST students, Monday (3/7).
During the program, the Head of the FTUI Education Modernization and Internationalization Unit Prof. Dr. Ir. Harinaldi, M.Eng., said that students will be involved in various academic activities and cultural activities. Academic activities include academic talks, industrial visits, and discussions with FTUI students from three departments, namely the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department, the Chemical Engineering Department, and the Industrial Engineering Department.
Eight academic talks were held on a variety of different topics, including sustainable materials, renewable energy, solar cells, concentrated solar power (CSP), biomass, biomass gasification, fuel cells, and circular economy. Participants will also visit four leading industrial companies in Indonesia, namely PT Ingres, PT INOAC, and PJB Muara Karang. These industrial visits provide students with practical insights into the implementation of sustainable energy technologies in an industrial setting.
Through academic activities, participants can gain a deeper understanding of various innovative solutions for sustainable energy. HKUST students also have the opportunity to discuss with FTUI students and professionals, which will enrich their perspectives in engineering and provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in the energy industry.
Cultural programs are also an integral part of this program. HKUST students have the opportunity to learn the Indonesian language and some Indonesian culture through batik painting, traditional instruments, and traditional dance activities. In addition, participants will also visit several famous cultural attractions in Indonesia, including Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Cinangneng, and Taman Safari. Through direct interaction with Indonesian society and culture, the students are expected to gain a deeper interpretation of the richness and diversity of Indonesian culture.
Two HKUST students, Oi Ling Cheung and Wing Hong Lee expressed their delight at being part of this program. “We are looking forward to learning new things and practical insights from experts in the field of Tropical Sustainable and Renewable Energy. In addition, we also anticipate cultural activities to learn more about the richness and diversity of cultures in Indonesia,” said Oi Ling Cheung, who is familiarly called Iscah.
