On Friday (June 13), the Ikatan Wanita Keluarga (IWK) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), held a workshop themed “Sports for Women” at the IDE Auditorium, FTUI. Members of IWK FTUI attended the event and was part of the organization’s regular social gathering series.
The event began with an opening speech by the Chairperson of IWK FTUI, Rini Fitriani Kemas Ridwan. “Today, we gather once again to strengthen our bonds through this workshop and IWK FTUI’s regular social gathering. This event is not just a moment of togetherness, but also provides a broader benefit. Through this sports workshop, we are encouraged to understand the importance of maintaining physical health as part of preserving our mental well-being. The balance between a healthy body and a peaceful mind is key to fulfilling our daily roles more optimally,” she said.
The workshop featured Yulia Andani Murti, M.K.K.K (CEO of Atheeva Clinic, Founder of the DIKARA Community) as the speaker. She delivered material on the importance of physical and mental health, how the body burns energy, the benefits of cardio exercise, and the connection between weak muscles, bones, and body fat.
“Exercising regularly not only boosts the immune system but also plays a vital role in maintaining mental health. Physical activity helps reduce stress and anxiety, while also increasing happiness through the release of endorphins,” explained Dr. Yulia.
She also emphasised that a lack of physical activity can lead to a loss of muscle mass. This condition increases the burden on bones, as weak muscles are unable to support the body properly, raising the risk of injuries, including osteoporosis. Moreover, as we age, our metabolism tends to slow down, making it even more crucial to stay active to maintain overall health.
As a practical solution for busy individuals, Dr. Yulia recommended light daily exercises such as cardio workouts, walking for 30 minutes, or cycling. These activities are effective in maintaining fitness without requiring a lot of time or specialised equipment.
Following the workshop, participants joined in a group workout session that focused on five upper-body strengthening exercises using dumbbells. This activity aimed not only to enhance physical fitness but also to serve as an interactive medium to strengthen camaraderie. The event concluded with a social session and the announcement of the IWK FTUI arisan (a traditional social gathering with a rotating savings system), offering members the opportunity to share experiences, exchange information, and foster closer relationships.
In a separate statement, Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his support for the initiative. “Initiatives like the one organized by IWK FTUI today are crucial in promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness about the importance of balancing physical and mental health, especially for women who often juggle dual roles in both their professional and family lives. FTUI fully supports activities that contribute holistically to the well-being of our academic community,” stated Prof. Kemas.
